Vox Media announced on May 1, 2025, that it was selling Polygon, its gaming and entertainment publication, to Canadian publisher Valnet. Vox said staff would be split among three outcomes: some would join Valnet, some would be laid off, and some would stay with Vox Media and move to The Verge. Contemporary reports confirmed departures and layoffs, but did not establish a definitive headcount or the sale price.

What was sold—and to whom?

The Polygon in this story is the gaming and entertainment publication Vox Media founded in 2012, not the blockchain company Polygon Labs. Vox announced the sale to Canadian publisher Valnet on May 1, 2025. In a staff note reported by Axios, Vox CEO Jim Bankoff said, “Making this change allows us to better prioritize our strongest opportunities for growth.”

Vox’s account described three possible staff outcomes:

  • Some Polygon staff would join Valnet.
  • Some would be laid off.
  • Some would remain at Vox Media and transfer to The Verge.

What is known about the layoffs?

Multiple departures were reported as the sale was announced. Polygon co-founder and editor-in-chief Chris Plante said he was no longer with the publication, and Nicole Carpenter also said she no longer had a job there, according to Insider Gaming.

PC Gamer reported on May 2 that the Writers Guild of America East said Polygon’s bargaining unit had been laid off. The union’s statement, quoted by PC Gamer, said the company “sold Polygon and laid off the bargaining unit at the site.”

How many people lost their jobs, and what was the sale price?

The contemporary reports cited here do not establish a definitive number of employees laid off. Insider Gaming said the exact count was unknown when it reported the sale on May 1, 2025. Vox’s account said some staff would be laid off; other coverage used broader descriptions such as “majority,” but those do not supply a settled headcount.

The sources also do not disclose the sale price or other financial terms. Without published figures, neither the scale of the cuts nor the financial value of the transaction can be quantified precisely.

Where did some former Polygon staff go?

Former Polygon staff later formed Rogue, an independent outlet. Rogue describes itself as worker-owned, subscription-based, and ad-free, and says it was created after the sale and layoffs with help from Rascal. That account is Rogue’s own description of its origins; readers can find it on Rogue’s website.
