Pokémon was estimated to have generated $100 billion in all-time sales in a 2021 Statista chart. Guinness World Records later put its estimated gross at $147 billion as of April 2024 and named it the best-selling media franchise. Neither figure is a current audited revenue total from The Pokémon Company, and neither measures the company’s or brand’s market value.
What does the $100 billion Pokémon claim mean?
The $100 billion figure is a historical estimate of Pokémon’s cumulative sales, published by Statista in a 2021 chart about the most valuable media franchises. It appeared in the context of the franchise’s 25th anniversary; it is not a company-reported lifetime revenue figure. Statista’s 2021 chart
The wording matters. “Valuable” can mean a company’s market capitalization or the estimated value of a brand or intellectual property. The Statista figure instead refers to estimated sales across a broad franchise. It should not be read as the value of The Pokémon Company, Nintendo, or the Pokémon intellectual property.
What is the later estimate?
Guinness World Records identifies Pokémon as the best-selling media franchise and states: “The best-selling media franchise is Pokémon (Japan), which had grossed an estimated $147,000,000,000 (£117 bn) as of April 2024.” The figure is an estimate, and its date is part of the claim. Guinness also estimates that $102.9 billion of the total was “thought to have” come from merchandise. That is merchandise overall—not a figure for toys alone—and remains an estimated contribution rather than a disclosed audited breakdown. Guinness World Records
Why the estimates are not company revenue
A franchise-wide gross-sales estimate can combine different products and commercial streams over many years. That is not necessarily the revenue recorded by any one company: sales may involve publishers, retailers, licensees and other businesses, and the estimate’s included categories may differ from a corporate accounting measure.

The Pokémon Company’s public figures pages report activity and reach, but do not provide a current audited cumulative revenue total for the entire franchise. The company’s international arm says it manages the brand outside Asia and handles areas including licensing, marketing, the trading card game, animation and home entertainment. Its licensing categories include toys, apparel and accessories, designer collaborations, tech gear and home décor. The Pokémon Company International: About
That broad product ecosystem helps explain why merchandise is a major part of the estimate, but it does not establish how much any individual product, licensee or company earned. Nor is gross franchise sales the same as profit, which would account for costs.

What official figures show about Pokémon’s scale
The Pokémon Company reports the following figures as of the end of March 2026. These are shipments, production and distribution reach—not revenue or a breakdown of either lifetime estimate. The Pokémon Company: Figures
| Measure | Reported figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon-related software | More than 515 million units shipped | Software shipments, not sales revenue |
| Trading Card Game cards | Over 85 billion cards produced | Production, not cards sold or revenue |
| Trading Card Game availability | More than 90 countries and regions | Distribution reach |
| Animated shows | Aired in more than 190 countries and regions | Broadcast reach |
The TCG and licensed merchandise categories illustrate the range of products around the franchise, but production totals and geographic availability cannot be converted into a dollar total without additional data.

How to compare Pokémon with another franchise
Before comparing a headline figure, check that both estimates use the same kind of measure and scope. A consumer-sales gross, a company’s booked revenue, licensed merchandise retail sales and a brand valuation answer different questions.
- Measure: Confirm whether the figure is gross sales, company revenue, merchandise sales or brand value.
- Time period: Compare matching dates or lifetime cutoffs; the 2021 Statista estimate and April 2024 Guinness estimate are not a consistent time series.
- Included categories and geography: Check which products, territories and sales channels count toward each total.
Without aligned definitions and dates, rankings can suggest a precision that the underlying figures do not support.
Is Pokémon the highest-grossing franchise of all time?
Guinness World Records lists Pokémon as the best-selling media franchise, with an estimated $147 billion gross as of April 2024. The careful formulation is that Pokémon is identified by Guinness as the best-selling media franchise on that estimated basis—not that the franchise has a precise, audited, current $147 billion revenue total.
