Nissan and Honda ended talks to integrate their businesses in February 2025. They remain partners on selected technology work, including an August 2026 agreement to standardize electronics and software for future vehicles. Nissan is trying to recover on its own, while Honda is also rebuilding its own auto business. That cooperation may help Nissan with specific projects, but it is not a financial rescue commitment.
What happened to the Nissan–Honda integration talks?
The companies did not merge and then unwind the deal. On February 13, 2025, Nissan and Honda announced that they had agreed to terminate the memorandum of understanding they signed on December 23, 2024, to consider integrating their businesses. Their joint announcement said they would instead continue a strategic partnership focused on intelligent and electrified vehicles.
The structure under discussion had also changed. The initial concept was a joint holding company. Honda later proposed that Honda become the parent company and Nissan its subsidiary through a share exchange. The companies said they were ending discussions because they needed speed in decision-making and execution in a volatile market.
Is Nissan in financial trouble?
Nissan’s recent results show both the severity of its difficulties and a short-term improvement. The Associated Press reported a 533 billion yen loss for FY2025, following a 670.9 billion yen loss for FY2024. For April through June 2026, Nissan reported a net profit of 3.8 billion yen, compared with a 115.8 billion yen net loss in the same quarter a year earlier. Sales for the quarter were 2.96 trillion yen, up 9.5% year over year, according to the AP.

- This is a 5"L x 2"W x 1.5"H Diecast Metal model with some plastic parts

Those figures cover different periods: the FY2025 result remained a substantial loss, while the first quarter of FY2026 returned to a small profit. One profitable quarter is an encouraging change from the prior-year quarter, but it does not show that Nissan’s recovery is complete.
What is Nissan doing to recover?
Nissan calls its recovery effort Re:Nissan. The company’s stated target is positive automotive operating profit and positive free cash flow by FY2026. Nissan describes a plan built around reducing costs, reshaping its product and market strategy, streamlining operations, and working with partners. It says it will focus on markets and choose models and prices to fit local demand. These are company plans and targets, not proof that the turnaround will succeed. See Nissan’s Re:Nissan plan.

What can Honda contribute?
The clearest announced example is project-level technology cooperation. Honda said on August 31, 2026, that it and Nissan had concluded an agreement to standardize electronic control units (ECUs) and software for next-generation software-defined vehicles. Nissan also describes work with Honda, Renault Group, and Mitsubishi Motors on vehicle intelligence and electrification.
Standardizing vehicle electronics and software could support collaboration on future technology, but the available announcements do not say Honda will fund Nissan’s losses, take responsibility for its balance sheet, or run its recovery plan. Nor do they establish deal economics or vehicle launch dates.

Honda has its own auto-business challenges
Honda’s May 14, 2026 business briefing focused on rebuilding its automobile business through cost reductions, more efficient development, and a stronger lineup in priority regions. Honda said it would direct more development and production resources toward hybrids in response to demand. Its stated goal of consolidated operating profit above 1.4 trillion yen in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2029 includes motorcycles and financial-services businesses; it is not an auto-only target or a sum committed to Nissan. Honda’s 2026 business briefing outlines the plan.
