Scopely acquired Niantic’s games business for an announced $3.5 billion, a deal that included Pokémon GO—not a standalone sale of Pokémon GO. The agreement was announced March 12, 2025, and Savvy Games Group confirmed it closed May 29, 2025. Scopely, the maker behind MONOPOLY GO!, is owned by Savvy Games Group, which describes itself as a Public Investment Fund company.
Who bought Pokémon GO, and what did the $3.5 billion cover?
The buyer was Scopely. The announced $3.5 billion transaction covered Niantic’s games business and portfolio, rather than assigning a separate price to Pokémon GO. The portfolio included:
- Pokémon GO
- Pikmin Bloom
- Monster Hunter Now
- Campfire
- Wayfarer
- Niantic’s games team
Savvy Games Group’s May 29, 2025 closing announcement said the acquired games and apps generated more than $1 billion in revenue in 2024 and had more than 30 million monthly active players. Those are figures reported by the acquiring company, not independently audited measures established here. The $3.5 billion was the announced value of the wider transaction, not an independently stated valuation for Pokémon GO alone.
Why is MONOPOLY GO! connected to the deal?
MONOPOLY GO! is one of Scopely’s franchises; it was not part of the Niantic acquisition. The ownership chain is Scopely, owned by Savvy Games Group, which Savvy describes as a Public Investment Fund company. The game appears in the headline because it is a recognizable Scopely title, while Pokémon GO was among the games Scopely acquired.

When was the sale announced and when did it close?
Niantic and Scopely announced the agreement on March 12, 2025. It was subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Savvy Games Group announced that the acquisition had closed on May 29, 2025. The first date marks the agreement announcement; the second confirms completion.
Which Niantic assets were not part of the games sale?
Niantic said its technology platform would be spun off separately into Niantic Spatial, a company focused on geospatial AI and augmented-reality software. Ingress Prime and Peridot were to operate within Niantic Spatial, rather than joining the games portfolio acquired by Scopely. The transaction therefore concerned Niantic’s games business, not every asset associated with Niantic.

What did the companies say about Pokémon GO’s team and future?
At the time of the announcement, Ed Wu, identified as the person leading the Pokémon GO team at Niantic, said the team would join Scopely and described it as staying together. He also said the partnership with The Pokémon Company would continue. Those were statements made when the deal was announced, not guarantees that the game’s operations or plans would never change. Wu put the point this way: “I won’t say that Pokémon GO will remain the same, because it has always been a work in progress.”
In a 2026 notice, the Pokémon GO team said the Niantic games team had officially updated its name to Scopely Explore, and that the Pokémon GO team remained the same as of that notice. The statement establishes the team’s naming and its reported continuity at that time; it does not set out future strategy.
