Is Sony raising PS5 prices because of tariffs?
Sony has not publicly identified tariffs as the specific cause. In the March announcement, Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing, said the company made the decision “with continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” The statement did not name a tariff, quantify a tariff effect or allocate the increase among different costs.
The timing drew attention to U.S. tariffs and broader economic pressures. The Associated Press reported that context while noting Sony did not specifically cite tariffs as the reason. That makes tariffs relevant background, not a confirmed explanation from Sony.

What cost pressures has Sony documented?
In a separate investor-relations Q&A, Sony said, “Rising memory prices increase bill of materials (BOM) costs and worsen manufacturing costs.” It also said it had secured the memory volumes needed for 2026, with pricing agreed to a certain extent, and would balance hardware pricing and promotional spending in responding to future memory-price changes.
This is documented cost context, but it is separate from Sony’s explanation for the April 2026 increase. Sony’s investor-relations comments do not establish how much memory costs—or any other individual factor—contributed to that decision. The same Q&A said Sony had made no decisions on the timing or pricing of a next-generation platform.
