Pakistan’s KSE-100 Index closed at 164,626.29 on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, down 1,632.25 points, or 0.98%, for the day. That is a historical close—not a current October 8, 2026 quote. The session swung sharply from an intraday high of 168,191 to a low of 164,229 as selling pressure outweighed buying.

What happened to the KSE-100 on February 25?

The benchmark started the session firmly, then reversed and fell to an intraday low of 164,229 before finishing at 164,626.29. The Express Tribune reported a 1,632.25-point, or 0.98%, daily decline and a high-to-low range of 3,962 points. The size of that range shows why the closing loss alone does not capture the day’s volatility.

The KSE-100 tracks the largest 100 companies by free-float market capitalisation, subject to sectoral representation rules, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan’s 2026 quarterly market review.

What factors were reported behind the selling?

Futures rollover and weak sentiment

Contemporaneous coverage described subdued investor sentiment and pressure linked to futures-contract rollover. Dawn called it the market’s third consecutive decline during futures rollover week. These were reported market explanations, not proof that one factor alone caused the drop.

Index-heavy stocks

The Express Tribune attributed a combined 928-point drag to United Bank Limited (UBL), Engro Holdings, Pakistan Petroleum, Lucky Cement, and DG Khan Cement. Dawn also identified these companies among the index-heavy stocks weighing on the session.

The IMF review was context, not an established cause

Dawn reported that a visiting IMF mission was beginning its third review under Pakistan’s Extended Fund Facility. The reporting does not establish that the review triggered the selloff. Ali Najib, Deputy Head of Trading at Arif Habib Ltd, described the session this way: “bearish pressure outweighed intermittent buying interest.”

How to read the 164,626 figure

The figure refers to the February 25, 2026 close reported by The Express Tribune and Dawn. It should not be treated as a live market level. The PSX Data Portal is dynamic: its October 8, 2026 snapshot showed a previous close of 168,580.40 and a session range beginning at 168,623.12, with the index around 168,000. Those are date-specific portal figures, not a quote for later dates.

The reports cited here provide the contemporaneous account of the February 25 close; they do not establish a separate official PSX closing bulletin for that session. For an up-to-date level, check the PSX Data Portal and note the date and time of the displayed quote.

What the decline does—and does not—tell investors

A one-day index fall records a change in the benchmark, not the performance or outlook of every listed company. The reported 0.98% decline and sharp intraday reversal describe that session; by themselves, they do not establish a longer-term trend or explain what an individual portfolio should do. Investors assessing the move should distinguish the dated closing figure from current prices and treat the cited rollover and sentiment explanations as market commentary rather than a definitive causal finding.
