PMP® Certification: Eligibility, 35 Training Hours and the 2026 Exam

PMP eligibility depends on education and non-overlapping project leadership experience. Learn how the 35-hour rule, 2026 live-course change and revised exam affect your next steps.

To earn the PMP® certification, you must meet one of PMI’s education-and-experience routes, complete 35 hours of project management training unless you hold an active CAPM® certification, and pass the exam. The revised exam launched in July 2026. A separate training-eligibility change takes effect on 1 December 2026, so the date and format of a course matter when you choose one.

What are the PMP certification requirements?

PMI’s July 2026 Examination Content Outline sets four routes based on education and professional experience leading and directing projects. The experience must fall within the 10 years before applying, and overlapping months do not count twice. A job title or time spent on a project, by itself, does not establish qualifying project leadership experience.

Education route Required project-leading experience
Upper-secondary or secondary education at the relevant mapped level 60 months (five years)
Recognized associate-level, higher-certificate, or advanced technical/vocational qualification mapped to the relevant post-secondary level 48 months (four years)
Bachelor’s degree or higher from a recognized institution, or qualifying non-degree award formally mapped to bachelor-equivalent level 36 months (three years)
Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center (GAC)-accredited program 24 months (two years)

GAC accreditation is a program quality designation; it does not change the degree level required. The route depends on the credential and its recognized or formally mapped level, not simply on the credential’s name. See PMI’s certification page for its overview of the routes and lookback period, and the July 2026 Examination Content Outline for detailed requirements.

How to document your application

PMI asks applicants to describe projects separately. If selected for an audit, you may need documentation verifying your education level and the credential’s authenticity. Where a credential does not state its framework level, the 2026 outline identifies ways to substantiate it. Use the outline’s documentation guidance for your specific education route rather than assuming that every qualification with a similar title maps to the same level.

How many training hours do I need for the PMP?

Most applicants need 35 hours of project management training. These are training hours, not project experience months. PMI says an active CAPM certification fulfills this training requirement. Its listed training routes include self-paced on-demand courses and instructor-led classes. Check PMI’s current certification page for the applicable details.

Will a live course qualify after 1 December 2026?

PMI says that starting 1 December 2026, live instructor-led training hours will count only when the training is delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP), a China Registered Education Provider (REP), or an eligible accredited academic program, including applicable PMI GAC programs. PMI says self-paced courses can come from any organization. Training completed before 1 December 2026 remains eligible under the requirements in effect before that date.

Before enrolling, check the course format, when you will complete it, and—if it is live instructor-led—whether the provider or academic program meets PMI’s criteria for that date and your location. Use PMI’s authorized training partner directory to verify ATP status. PMI describes its own self-paced exam-prep course as providing the required 35 hours and says ATP training uses PMI-developed content aligned with the exam; these are documented options, not evidence that one format produces better exam results.

What changed in the PMP exam in July 2026?

The revised PMP exam launched in July 2026. PMI’s updated domain weights shift study emphasis toward Process and Business Environment compared with the previous outline.

Exam domain July 2026 exam Previous weights shown by PMI
People 33% 42%
Process 41% 50%
Business Environment 26% 8%

PMI’s 2026 update says the content gives more attention to AI, sustainability, stakeholder engagement, outcomes, value, and business impact. Use the revised weights—not the previous percentages—to plan current study. PMI states that “The PMP Certification Exam Content Outline (2026) defines what’s tested on the exam.” Read the exam update and outline information as well as the full outline before choosing study materials.

Exam length and languages

PMI’s certification page, checked in 2026, lists the exam as 180 questions and 240 minutes. That page also lists available languages. Because exam format and language availability can change, confirm both on PMI’s certification page before scheduling.

How should you choose PMP training and study materials?

Start with your eligibility route and the date you plan to complete training. Then choose preparation that satisfies the hours requirement, if you still need it, and follows the July 2026 exam outline. The available options are not supported by comparative pass-rate evidence, so there is no sound basis here for ranking providers by likelihood of success.

  • Confirm the hours: Verify that the course provides 35 qualifying hours if you need them; an active CAPM meets the training requirement.
  • Check format and timing: Compare self-paced flexibility with the schedule and group structure of a live course. For live instructor-led training completed on or after 1 December 2026, confirm PMI’s provider or academic-program eligibility.
  • Match the current outline: Look for alignment with the July 2026 domains and their revised weights, including the increased emphasis on Business Environment.
  • Choose structure that fits your study needs: Consider whether you want independent study, an instructor, or a group setting, and whether the schedule is workable alongside your other commitments.
  • Use the right reference: PMI identifies the PMBOK® Guide as its project-management standard, but the Exam Content Outline defines what the exam tests. The guide is an optional reference, not a substitute for the outline or for required training hours. Check PMI’s current materials and edition information before buying a book.

PMI lists its self-paced exam-prep course, ATP instructor-led training, and practice resources on its exam preparation page. Compare their terms and current outline alignment directly rather than relying on a course label alone.
