Outbound Aerospace’s Funding, Prototype Flight and 2025 Shutdown

Outbound Aerospace raised funding for a blended-wing demonstrator, flew its STeVE prototype in 2025, and later shut down after running out of money.

Outbound Aerospace’s 2024 funding was meant to help build a small demonstrator of its proposed blended-wing aircraft. The prototype later flew, and the company reported raising $1.15 million in pre-seed funding—but GeekWire reported in December 2025 that Outbound was shutting down after running out of money and failing to secure customer commitments for its next stage.

What funding did Outbound Aerospace receive in 2024?

GeekWire reported on July 29, 2024, that Outbound had raised about $60,000 in angel funding and that startup accelerator Antler was investing $250,000. Antler also committed to match 50% of funds Outbound raised from external investors in its next round, up to an additional $250,000. That match was conditional; the 2024 announcement described a commitment structure, not proof that the full amount was ultimately drawn. GeekWire’s July 2024 report said the money would support development of a one-eighth-scale demonstrator.

The company’s longer-term concept, called Olympic, was a passenger aircraft with a blended-wing design that Outbound described as potentially scalable to roughly the size of a Boeing 757. That was an ambition, not an aircraft that had been built, certified or shown to carry passengers.

Did Outbound’s prototype ever fly?

Yes. In a March 25, 2025 report, GeekWire said Outbound had flown STeVE, a remote-controlled, 300-pound prototype with a 22-foot wingspan. Its reported first test flight lasted 16 seconds at the Pendleton UAS Range in Oregon. This was a subscale demonstrator flight; it did not establish the performance, safety or certification status of a full-size passenger aircraft.

How did the funding develop after the 2024 announcement?

GeekWire reported that Outbound had raised $1.15 million in pre-seed funding by March 2025. Its account attributed $500,000 to Blue Collective, $500,000 to Antler’s matching investment and $150,000 to private investors. These are reported figures for a later funding stage, distinct from the 2024 angel funding and Antler investment. GeekWire’s March 2025 report connected the fundraising news with STeVE’s first flight.

Why did Outbound shut down?

GeekWire reported on December 11, 2025, that Outbound was winding down after running out of money and failing to secure customer commitments strong enough to finance its next stage. Co-founder and CTO Jake Armenta put it this way: “The simplest answer is that we ran out of money, and hadn’t really secured customer commitments that were strong enough to secure the next stage of investment.” GeekWire’s shutdown report is the latest company-status report available here; it does not establish whether the company’s status changed afterward.

How did the company’s direction change?

Outbound began with a commercial passenger-aircraft ambition, but the shutdown report said it had considered a possible move into military drones. That was a strategic option discussed during the company’s wind-down, not a delivered product or a secured military contract. Armenta said, “We didn’t really plan on being a military vendor.”

The sequence matters: the 2024 funding supported a demonstrator plan, the 2025 pre-seed report documented a flight and a larger funding total, and the December 2025 report described a shutdown. The reported prototype milestone did not, by itself, solve the financing and customer-demand challenges needed to take the business to its next stage.
