There is no official evidence that Nintendo failed to meet Switch 2 demand in Japan, or that U.S. buyers are next to face a shortage. Nintendo reported that Japanese holiday sales were stronger than expected, while sales in Europe and the U.S. were weaker than expected. Those comparisons describe sales against Nintendo’s forecasts—not whether stores ran out of consoles. As of October 8, 2026, the latest official cumulative figure is 23.68 million Switch 2 units sold worldwide through June 30; it does not show current U.S. inventory.
What Nintendo’s figures do—and don’t—say
Nintendo’s official sales page reports 23.68 million Switch 2 hardware units sold worldwide through June 30, 2026, alongside 58.17 million software units. These are cumulative global sales, not a count of consoles available in Japan or the U.S., and they do not reveal whether a particular retailer has stock today. Nintendo’s cumulative hardware and software sales data is not broken out by region.

In its May 8, 2026 financial-results briefing, Nintendo said Switch 2 sales for its fiscal year ended March 2026 reached 19.86 million units. That exceeded the company’s initial forecast of 15 million and its revised forecast of 19 million. This is evidence of strong first-year sales, but it still does not establish how many shoppers were unable to buy a console.
What Nintendo said about Japan and the U.S.
In the May briefing, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described Japan’s holiday season as strong and said results in other parts of the world—particularly Europe and the U.S.—were weaker than expected. In February, Nintendo had similarly said Japanese hardware sales exceeded expectations while overseas sales were somewhat weaker. These are dated comparisons with Nintendo’s expectations, not reports of stockouts or unmet orders.

Nintendo also said it expanded production capacity after launch and held a certain amount of components and products to support production plans. That provides context about its supply response, but is not a promise of uninterrupted availability or a measure of current retail stock.
Why regional sales can differ
Console sales are shaped not only by production but also by when games people want to play arrive. Nintendo attributed Japan’s relative holiday strength in part to Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Kirby Air Riders. Later, it said Pokémon Pokopia performed well in Japan and other regions and contributed to hardware sales. Nintendo also cited updates to Animal Crossing: New Horizons as supporting engagement.

That context matters when comparing Japan with the U.S.: a stronger sales period in one market can reflect timing and software demand, rather than a supply shortage there or an impending shortage elsewhere.
How to tell whether the U.S. is actually short of stock
The official figures and comments available on October 8 do not settle whether U.S. buyers are facing shortages now. To assess current availability, look for dated evidence from U.S. retailers and compare it with reporting on U.S. sales or shipments. Keep the measures separate:

- Retail inventory: whether specific U.S. stores show the console in stock, and when that status was checked.
- Sell-through: units purchased by consumers in a defined place and period.
- Shipments: units sent into a market or sales channel, which may not yet have reached shoppers.
- Demand versus forecast: whether sales were above or below Nintendo’s expectations, not whether all interested customers could buy one.
For a purchase decision, check the retailer’s live listing and local store availability rather than treating a worldwide sales total or an older regional comparison as a stock report.

Nintendo’s investor-relations schedule listed November 5, 2026, for its six-month earnings release for the fiscal year ending March 2027. As of October 8, that release had not yet occurred. It may provide updated sales and commentary, but a global cumulative total alone would still not establish whether U.S. stores are short of stock.
