Nintendo’s game prices depend on the title, format and retailer—not one universal Switch 2 price. Starting with preorders in May 2026 for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Nintendo says new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 will have an MSRP different from their physical versions. The company has not set one standard price gap, and retailers may charge different amounts.
What Nintendo’s variable-pricing policy means
The policy is specific: it applies to new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2, beginning with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book in May 2026. Nintendo says those digital titles will have an MSRP different from the physical versions. Its statement does not establish a single digital-versus-physical price difference, nor does it say every Switch 2 game is covered. Nintendo’s support page, “About Nintendo Switch 2 Game Pricing,” attributes the difference to production and distribution costs and says it offers players more choice.
This is a later policy than Nintendo’s U.S. launch announcement in April 2025, which listed the same launch MSRP for the physical and digital versions of two example games. The statements cover different dates and scopes; the launch examples should not be treated as a promise that formats will always have equal MSRPs.
Why are Switch 2 games different prices?
Nintendo says the format difference reflects the different costs of producing and distributing packaged and digital games. For software pricing more broadly, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company also considers regional factors and rising costs, including larger game files and longer development periods. In the May 2025 Financial Results Briefing Q&A, he said Nintendo would continue to consider an appropriate price for each title. That points to title-by-title pricing rather than one fixed price tier for all games. Nintendo’s FY2025 results briefing Q&A is an English translation of the Japanese original.

Are physical Switch 2 games more expensive than digital?
Not necessarily. Nintendo’s policy says the two formats will have different MSRPs for the covered new digital titles, but it does not say which format will cost more or by how much in every case. Retailer prices can also differ from MSRP. Compare the same title and edition in the same region, checking the current physical and digital listings rather than assuming one format is always cheaper.
How much does Mario Kart World cost on Switch 2?
Nintendo of America announced a U.S. launch MSRP of $79.99 for Mario Kart World on April 18, 2025, applying that amount to both physical and digital versions at launch. This is a historical U.S. launch MSRP, not a claim about the game’s current price at a particular retailer. Nintendo’s announcement also listed Donkey Kong Bananza at a U.S. launch MSRP of $69.99 for both formats. Nintendo’s April 18, 2025 launch announcement gives those dated examples.

Does Nintendo set one price for every Switch 2 game?
No. Nintendo says pricing is considered for each title, and the digital-versus-physical MSRP policy is limited to new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 starting with the May 2026 preorder period described above. The announcement does not supply a universal MSRP or a standard format-price gap for all Switch 2 games.
Keep hardware announcements separate from game pricing, too. Nintendo’s May 2026 investor presentation scheduled the U.S. Switch 2 console MSRP to rise from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. That is a console hardware price revision, not evidence of a change to game prices. Nintendo’s May 2026 investor presentation lists the hardware change.

Are Nintendo’s game prices the same at every retailer?
No. Nintendo says retail partners set their own prices for physical and digital games, and prices may vary by title. MSRP is therefore not necessarily the amount a customer will pay at checkout. To make a useful comparison, check the same title and edition, the same country or region and tax treatment, both formats, and the listing’s current selling price. Treat a past MSRP announcement as dated context, not as a current quote.
