Re:

Some Nintendo 3DS Models Now Rival the U.S. Switch 2 Price

Some New Nintendo 3DS XL resale examples are approaching the U.S. Switch 2 price, but model, condition, and bundle determine whether the comparison makes sense.

Some Nintendo 3DS models, particularly the New Nintendo 3DS XL, have recorded resale prices close to the U.S. Nintendo Switch 2’s $499.99 price, effective September 1, 2026. But that does not mean every used 3DS is worth hundreds of dollars: model, condition, bundle, and whether a figure is an asking price or a completed sale all matter.

How close are 3DS resale prices to a Switch 2?

Tom’s Hardware reported that New Nintendo 3DS XL systems were fetching $200–$350 on eBay, citing a post dated December 29, 2025. That is a reported snapshot, not a comprehensive survey of eBay sales. A separate completed-sale record shows a tested working New Nintendo 3DS XL Black selling for $300 on September 9, 2026. Tom’s Hardware’s report and PriceCharting’s dated sales page provide examples, not a market-wide average.

Nintendo’s official U.S. Switch 2 price is $499.99, effective September 1, 2026, following a change from $449.99. That is the relevant comparison for U.S. buyers as of October 8, 2026; prices vary by territory, so the U.S. figure should not be applied globally. Nintendo’s May 2026 price-revision announcement states the change and effective date.

Why the model and condition change the price

The 3DS family is not one interchangeable resale item. A standard used console, a New Nintendo 3DS XL, a limited edition, a complete boxed unit, and a sealed collectible can attract very different prices. Notebookcheck reported a range of roughly $200 to nearly $1,000 across standard and limited-edition models. That is the publication’s reported range, not a representative average for ordinary used consoles. Notebookcheck’s report attributes the rise to dwindling supply and renewed collector interest, but the cited material does not establish those factors as measured causes.

PriceCharting’s completed-sale page illustrates how much the sale itself can depend on what is included: a New Nintendo 3DS XL Black with a game and accessories sold for $309.99 on September 11, 2026, while boxed or sealed examples appeared at substantially higher prices. Those are different categories from a bare, used system and should not be treated as comparable evidence of what a typical working console costs.

How to judge an eBay price before buying

Use completed sales as evidence of what buyers actually paid; an active listing only shows what a seller hopes to receive. The 2026 discussion in r/3DS reflects that practical advice, but community discussion is not a market survey.

  • Match the exact model. Check whether the listing is for a New Nintendo 3DS XL, another 3DS model, or a limited edition.
  • Match condition and functionality. A tested working unit is not equivalent to an untested, damaged, or parts-only console.
  • Check what is included. Charger, stylus, games, accessories, and packaging can change the bundle’s value.
  • Separate ordinary used systems from collectibles. Boxed and sealed examples belong in a different comparison set from a used console.
  • Compare completed transactions. Look for recent sold listings that resemble the specific console and bundle you are considering, rather than relying on high active asking prices.
  • Keep region in view. A U.S. Switch 2 price is not a universal benchmark for buyers elsewhere.

What the price reports do—and do not—show

The reported eBay range and dated completed sales support the narrower conclusion that some 3DS models are expensive on the resale market, with the New Nintendo 3DS XL among the examples. They do not prove that every 3DS model has appreciated uniformly, that $200–$350 is the usual price for all used systems, or that any single factor caused the increase. The nearly $1,000 figures reported for some models are especially poor comparisons for a standard used console when they concern limited editions or boxed and sealed examples.
