In 2024, customers of fintech apps including Yotta and Juno found they could not access or verify balances after Synapse Financial Technologies, a nonbank intermediary connecting apps with partner banks, filed for bankruptcy. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says failures to track where funds were held and reconcile records left consumers without access. That is not the same as proof that every customer permanently lost the balance shown in an app.
What happened to Synapse users’ money?
Synapse Financial Technologies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on April 22, 2024. It supplied technology connecting nonbank fintech platforms with traditional banks; it was not itself the partner bank holding every customer deposit. The CFPB says Synapse failed to maintain adequate records of where consumer funds were located and to ensure its records matched those of partner banks. The regulator says those failures caused consumers to lose access to funds. CFPB case summary.
When records held by an app, an intermediary, and a bank do not agree, a displayed balance may be difficult to verify against money actually held in an account. Banks attempted to reconcile records, and the CFPB says some consumers lacked access for weeks or months. It also says many had not received the full balances shown in their accounts as of its case summary. An inaccessible balance, a disputed ledger entry, a bank-held deposit, and a confirmed final loss are different things.
How large was the reported discrepancy?
The CFPB reported that partner banks held between $60 million and $90 million less than the amount reflected in Synapse’s consumer records. This is a regulator-reported comparison across the arrangement, not a calculation of any one person’s loss or proof that the entire difference was permanently lost. The case page does not establish how the discrepancy was ultimately allocated among customers and institutions. CFPB case summary.

What did customers hear?
Futurism reported that Yotta user Kayla Morris told a California bankruptcy court hearing: “We were informed last Monday that Evolve was only going to pay us $500 out of that $280,000,” and, “It’s just devastating.” This is Morris’s account of what she was told at that time, not a court determination of her final recovery or a representative outcome for all users. Why could an app balance differ from bank records?
In this arrangement, an app could show a customer-facing balance while the intermediary and the partner bank maintained their own records. The CFPB says Synapse did not adequately track fund locations or keep its records aligned with partner banks’ records. Evolve, one of the banks involved, separately said its reconciliation found material irregularities in Synapse ledgers, including reported-balance changes that did not correspond to transactions. Evolve also said Synapse supplied it and end users with different account statements, including omissions of transfers from Evolve to Synapse Brokerage. Those are Evolve’s statements about its reconciliation, not findings that establish every user’s account history. CFPB case summary; Evolve statement, July 12, 2024; Evolve update.

The practical problem is that reconciling a customer’s claim may require tracing funds across accounts and comparing records that do not match. An amount visible in an app is evidence of what the app displayed, but it does not by itself resolve where funds were held or what amount a bank can verify.
Was the money FDIC insured?
FDIC deposit insurance applies to deposits at insured banks, subject to the insurance rules; a fintech app or nonbank intermediary is not itself an FDIC-insured bank merely because it offers an account-like product. In arrangements involving pooled custodial accounts, records identifying beneficial owners and their balances matter to determining whether deposit insurance applies to each customer’s funds. The FDIC discussed these recordkeeping difficulties in a 2024 proposed-rule statement; that proposal should not be mistaken for a final rule or a guarantee that every Synapse user would be reimbursed. So a fintech’s bankruptcy is not automatically equivalent to the failure of an insured bank, and the phrase “FDIC insured” does not establish immediate access to a particular disputed balance. The actual account arrangement, the bank holding funds, the applicable records, and the circumstances of any bank failure all matter.

Not all outcomes are established by the cited official updates. The CFPB case page says a stipulated final judgment was entered on September 12, 2025. It provides injunctive relief, including prohibiting the sale of customer information, and a $1 civil money penalty. The CFPB says the penalty enables it to access the civil penalty fund for consumer redress; it is not a $1 payment to each customer, and the page does not state an individual payment amount or schedule. Evolve’s reconciliation portal search result identifies a January 8, 2026 update saying the bank planned to distribute funds to certain end users after further analysis of ledger irregularities. That update concerns Evolve and certain users; it does not establish full repayment for every Synapse customer or completion of reconciliation across all partner institutions. What affected users can do
- Preserve your records. Save app statements, transaction confirmations, account agreements, emails, and notices from the app, bank, or any administrator handling the matter. Keep copies with dates, since they may help document what was displayed and what transactions occurred.
- Identify the account arrangement. Check the account agreement and statements for the named bank and whether the product involved a deposit account or a brokerage/intermediary arrangement. Do not assume all fintech products use the same custody structure.
- Verify current contact and claim instructions. Use contact details published on the relevant bank, fintech, trustee, or regulator’s current official pages. Procedures can change, and there is no single universal claims channel established for every affected user.
- Compare statements carefully. Note any difference between the app’s displayed balance, bank statements, and transaction confirmations, and ask the relevant institution to explain the specific discrepancy. Evolve’s 2024 statement listed customer care for Synapse Brokerage end users, but users should verify current contact details through official channels rather than relying on an old notice.
