Perth homewares business Onyx & Smoke announced it would cease trading at the end of March 2025, according to a 20 March report by PerthNow. The company said it would continue taking orders until then. PerthNow reported the announcement; it did not independently confirm that trading ended on the stated date.
What Onyx & Smoke said about closing
In an Instagram statement reproduced by PerthNow, the company said, “It’s with great sadness that we say goodbye.” It attributed the decision to a combination of business pressures and changes in the owners’ personal lives during the previous year.
The company cited rising production costs, a tough economic climate, increasing Australian labour expenses and what it called the “insatiable demand for ‘fast furniture’.” It also said personal changes had played a role, adding that they had “also played a role in this difficult decision.” These are the company’s stated reasons, not independently established or quantified causes.
PerthNow did not name an individual speaker or identify a person’s role, so the statement should be attributed to the company rather than a named owner. The report supplied no named quantitative figure about the closure or its causes.

What the Perth business made
PerthNow described Onyx & Smoke as a homewares and soft furnishings business making beanbag chairs, ottomans and cushions in Perth. The report said upholstery seamstresses made its products using upholstery-grade fabrics, including fabrics from Warwick, Zepel, Wortley, Sunbrella and Mokum.
What is known about orders and the sample sale
The company’s reported plan was to accept orders until its announced end-of-March 2025 trading cessation. PerthNow also reported that a one-off Instagram sample sale was due to begin on 24 March 2025. That was a historical announcement: the report does not establish whether the sale took place, whether it is over, or whether any products are available now.

What the report does—and does not—confirm
PerthNow’s 20 March 2025 report is the available account of the announcement and reproduces the company’s explanation. It does not independently confirm the final trading date, establish the business’s later status, or verify whether products remain available. It also provides no financial records or market analysis that would separate the effects of the reasons the company listed. The stated “tough economic climate” should therefore be understood as the company’s explanation, not as a quantified finding about Perth’s economy or Australian small manufacturers generally.
