Hims & Hers’ Cheaper Semaglutide Pill: What Happened to the Ozempic Alternative

The cheaper semaglutide pill announced by Hims & Hers was compounded, not an FDA-approved generic. A March 2026 agreement changed the company’s announced direction.

The “cheaper version of Ozempic” was not an FDA-approved generic. Hims & Hers announced a compounded semaglutide pill in February 2026, but in March the companies announced an agreement under which Hims & Hers would offer FDA-approved Ozempic and Wegovy and stop advertising compounded GLP-1 offerings. For anyone comparing costs, the key distinction is between a compounded product, a branded medicine’s list price and a self-pay offer—not simply “cheap” versus “expensive.”

What the cheaper semaglutide pill actually was

On February 5, 2026, Hims & Hers announced a lower-priced compounded semaglutide pill positioned as an alternative to Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill. News coverage described it as an off-brand weight-loss pill, while Novo Nordisk called the proposed product an “unapproved, inauthentic, and untested knockoff semaglutide pill.” That phrase was the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent finding about a particular dispensed batch.

“Compounded” does not mean “generic.” FDA says compounded semaglutide is not FDA-approved; it has not gone through the FDA approval process as a finished drug demonstrating safety and effectiveness for its labeled uses. The proposal therefore should not be described as generic Ozempic, an FDA-approved Ozempic pill, or a proven equivalent to Wegovy.

How the story changed

On March 9, Novo Nordisk announced an agreement with Hims & Hers. Under the announced terms, Hims & Hers would offer FDA-approved Ozempic and Wegovy at Novo Nordisk’s self-pay prices, stop advertising compounded GLP-1 offerings, and allow existing patients to discuss a transition to approved alternatives with a health professional when clinically appropriate. That agreement is the latest sourced status here; it superseded the February proposal as the relevant account of Hims & Hers’ announced direction.

Later access announcements concern approved products, not the February compounded pill. Novo Nordisk announced a Wegovy subscription program for eligible self-pay patients through selected telehealth providers on March 31, 2026. Amazon announced expanded access to Novo Nordisk’s FDA-approved Ozempic pill through Amazon Pharmacy in May 2026. Neither announcement establishes that every patient can use the service or pay the same amount: check current provider participation, location, prescription requirements, eligibility and the actual listing or offer.

How to compare the cost without mixing unlike prices

A headline price can describe very different things. The available announcements do not establish one universal current out-of-pocket price for every patient, dose, location or insurance situation.

Price or access claim What it means What it does not establish
$675 per month, effective January 1, 2027 Novo Nordisk announced this as the list price for specified Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus products. It is not a universal self-pay price. Novo Nordisk said the list-price change would not alter its direct-to-patient self-pay prices.
Lower, predictable monthly Wegovy subscription price, announced March 31, 2026 An announced program for eligible self-pay patients through selected telehealth providers. The announcement does not give a universal price for all patients or guarantee current participation by a particular provider.
February 2026 compounded-pill proposal A proposed lower-priced compounded semaglutide option announced by Hims & Hers. It was not an FDA-approved generic or an approved Ozempic product; the later agreement changed Hims & Hers’ announced direction.

Before comparing offers, check whether the amount is a list price, self-pay price or insurance cost; the dose and formulation; eligibility and effective dates; and whether service or membership fees are included. A lower advertised figure is not necessarily the lower total cost for your circumstances.

Safety checks when buying semaglutide online

FDA advises consumers not to treat compounded drugs as interchangeable with FDA-approved medicines. Its online-purchasing guidance flags claims that a compounded drug is the same as an approved drug, unusually deep discounts, and sellers that do not require screening and a prescription from a licensed clinician. It also advises checking whether a clinician is available after delivery, whether the pharmacy and label appear legitimate, and whether packaging is damaged or directions are missing.

FDA has also reported concerns involving patients who received doses beyond those in FDA-approved labeling. The available information does not provide a denominator-based rate that would support a numerical estimate of risk. If you are considering treatment, discuss the specific medicine and dose with a licensed health professional rather than relying on an online equivalence or savings claim.

Ozempic and Wegovy are not interchangeable labels

Both are semaglutide medicines from Novo Nordisk, but the brand names refer to distinct FDA-approved products and uses. The February announcement concerned a compounded pill framed as a weight-loss alternative to Wegovy—not an approved Ozempic pill. Later announcements about Ozempic or Wegovy access refer to FDA-approved branded products. Which treatment is appropriate depends on an individual’s health and a clinician’s judgment; a price comparison alone cannot establish that one product is a suitable substitute for another.
