Nintendo’s revenue story has three distinct phases: the original Switch’s late-cycle sales drop, a sharp rebound when Switch 2 launched, and a weaker year-on-year comparison in the first quarter of FY2027. That latest quarterly revenue decline came alongside higher operating profit, so it is not evidence by itself of a company-wide collapse or a failed console transition.
Why did Nintendo revenue fall?
The headline “nosedive” fits Nintendo’s fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, when sales fell as the original Switch aged. It does not describe the next full fiscal year: Switch 2’s launch drove a substantial annual rebound. The latest quarter reported in Nintendo’s August 6, 2026 release was down year on year, but it compares with a quarter that included Switch 2’s launch.
| Period | Net sales | Year-on-year change | What the comparison represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| FY2025, year ended March 31, 2025 | ¥1,164.9 billion | Down 30.3% | Decline during the original Switch’s late cycle |
| FY2026, year ended March 31, 2026 | ¥2,313.0 billion | Up 98.5% | Switch 2 launch-year rebound |
| FY2027 Q1, April 1–June 30, 2026 | ¥517.8 billion | Down 9.5% | Quarterly comparison against the prior-year Switch 2 launch quarter |
Source: Nintendo Co., Ltd., FY2025 and FY2026 annual results, and Consolidated Results for the Three Months Ended June 30, 2026, released August 6, 2026. The quarterly change is not directly comparable to a full-year change.
Is the original Nintendo Switch dying?
The original Switch is in decline as hardware, but Nintendo’s disclosures do not show that its software activity has disappeared. In FY2026, the company reported 3.80 million original Switch hardware units and 136.91 million software units. Nintendo said continued demand in the console’s tenth year, backward compatibility and evergreen games supported software sales.

In FY2027 Q1, original Switch hardware units were down 31.8% year on year to 0.66 million, while software units rose 38.6% to 33.81 million. Those figures describe units reported by Nintendo, not an independent count of consumer purchases. They show why a maturing console can lose hardware momentum while its installed base still supports game sales.
How much has Nintendo Switch 2 sold?
For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units and 48.71 million software units. President Shuntaro Furukawa said the hardware total exceeded the company’s initial 15-million forecast and its revised 19-million forecast. These are Nintendo-reported sales figures, not a third-party estimate of consumer sell-through.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
In the first quarter of FY2027, Switch 2 hardware units were 3.82 million, down 34.4% from 5.82 million in the same quarter a year earlier, when the console launched. Software units for the new system were 9.46 million, up 9.2%. The hardware decline is therefore a year-on-year quarterly comparison against an unusually high launch-period base; it should not be treated as a lifetime-sales decline or, on its own, as proof of a full-year demand trend.
Nintendo defines sell-in as sales by the Nintendo group to outside entities. It includes sales to business partners as well as direct consumer sales and downloads, so the reported unit figures should not be relabeled as independently measured end-customer purchases.

Why did Nintendo profit rise while revenue fell?
Operating profit increased even as quarterly net sales declined. Nintendo reported operating profit of ¥142.6 billion for FY2027 Q1, up 150.5% year on year. Its explanation points to the composition of sales and a period-specific accounting benefit, rather than showing that revenue was growing.
- Software made up a larger proportion of sales. Switch 2 and original Switch software unit sales both increased in the quarter, even as hardware units fell.
- Tariff refunds reduced cost of sales. Nintendo’s explanatory materials said approximately US$300 million in U.S. IEEPA tariff refunds was recognized as a reduction in cost of sales for the quarter.
The refund recognition is a specific benefit in this reporting period, not evidence that the same boost will recur. Nintendo reported that digital sales represented 61.5% of dedicated-platform software sales for the quarter; this is a share of software sales, not of the company’s total revenue.

What is Nintendo’s outlook for the rest of FY2027?

What does Nintendo say about the Switch 2 transition?
Management has expressed confidence, but that confidence is not a guarantee of future sales. In its May 11, 2026 Q&A summary, Furukawa said: “The pace of adoption of Nintendo Switch 2 is extremely fast even when compared to Nintendo Switch, and we do not see any particular concerns about its momentum at this time.”
Furukawa also attributed first-year adoption to expanded production capacity, worldwide pre-launch experience events and the new console’s ability to play original Switch software. He said the holiday season was strong in Japan but weaker than expected in Europe and the U.S. The company’s latest reported software figures offer a separate sign of activity: in FY2027 Q1, Nintendo cited Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream at 7.94 million units and Pokémon Pokopia at 1.27 million units among contributors to software sales.
