Norwegian Cruise Line’s published fee information describes an existing daily onboard service charge, separate charges on some purchases, and other costs that may not be included in a cruise fare. The official materials cited here do not establish that NCL issued a new or sudden warning. Before sailing, check your booking confirmation and applicable contract for the charges that apply to your trip.
What is NCL’s daily onboard service charge?
NCL’s cruise-preparation FAQ lists a daily service charge for bookings made on or after January 1, 2023. The published rates apply to guests age 3 or older:
| Cabin category | NCL-published daily charge |
|---|---|
| The Haven and Suites | $25.00 per person per day |
| Club Balcony Suite and below | $20.00 per person per day |
These are the rates stated in NCL’s cruise-preparation FAQ, accessed October 8, 2026. Check your booking documents for the terms applying to your reservation.
Which charges are added to specific purchases?
The daily service charge is distinct from purchase-based charges. NCL says it adds a 20% gratuity or service charge to beverage purchases, spa and salon services, specialty restaurant dining, and entertainment-based dining. The charge is associated with those listed purchases; it is not the same as the per-person daily service charge.

NCL says the daily service charge supports staff compensation, including complimentary restaurant staff, stateroom stewards, and behind-the-scenes support staff. The company describes that compensation as a combination of salary and incentive programs.
What other costs may not be included in the fare?
NCL’s February 2026 guest ticket contract lists examples of costs that may be excluded unless specified otherwise, including service charges, drinks, gratuities relating to services, travel insurance, shore excursions, personal expenses, and some onboard dining. It also says onboard services and goods must be paid for before disembarkation.

Whether a particular item is included can depend on your booking terms. Review your confirmation and the contract applicable to your cruise rather than assuming that every fare or promotion covers the same items. The contract is available as NCL’s February 2026 guest ticket contract.
Can you prepay the daily service charge?
NCL says guests can request prepayment through a travel professional and add the service charge up to 24 hours before sailing. Its FAQ says service charges are refundable if the cruise is cancelled. Check your booking details to see whether the charge has already been accounted for, and confirm the applicable cancellation terms for your reservation.

For Hawaii sailings, NCL’s FAQ says a 4.275% prepaid service-charge GET tax applies. That statement is itinerary-specific; verify the tax and charge against your particular sailing.
How onboard spending and card holds work
NCL says onboard purchases are posted to an onboard account, which can be funded with a registered card or a cash deposit. Card authorizations and additional holds may reduce available credit or restrict funds in a bank account while the cruise account is being managed.

NCL warns that debit-card holds may remain for up to 30 days after the cruise ends. The actual timing can depend on the card issuer and account, so allow for funds to remain unavailable after disembarkation. NCL’s FAQ discourages debit-card use for this reason.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before you sail
- Confirm the daily service charge shown for your booking and cabin category.
- Check whether your fare or promotion specifies any inclusions that affect the listed exclusions.
- Budget separately for purchases that carry NCL’s stated 20% service charge.
- Review how your onboard account will be funded and leave room for card authorizations or holds.
- For Hawaii itineraries, verify the applicable prepaid service-charge tax for your sailing.
NCL’s rationale for prepayment is that it lets passengers plan their budget before the cruise and have more freedom onboard. The published fee terms are not evidence of a newly introduced charge or a specific sudden warning.
