Northvolt announced in September 2024 that it expected to eliminate about 1,600 jobs in Sweden. The company later filed for bankruptcy, but some of its factories and other assets have since been acquired by Lyten, which says battery manufacturing has restarted at the Skellefteå site. That is a continuation of activity at certain facilities—not a survival of Northvolt AB.
Why did Northvolt announce 1,600 job cuts?
On 23 September 2024, Northvolt said approximately 1,600 positions in Sweden were expected to be made redundant as it revised its operations and focused resources on large-scale cell manufacturing at Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå. The company’s announced breakdown was:
- 1,000 positions in Skellefteå
- 400 positions in Västerås
- 200 positions in Stockholm
Northvolt had already announced a strategic review on 9 September 2024. It said the Skellefteå cathode active material facility would be placed into care and maintenance until further notice, and that it was seeking to secure a future for Northvolt Systems in Poland. The September 23 job-cut announcement was therefore part of a broader restructuring, not an announcement that the company had closed. Northvolt’s September 2024 update described the revised Swedish operations and expected redundancies; its strategic review announcement outlined the earlier steps.
Did Northvolt go bankrupt?
Yes. On 12 March 2025, Northvolt announced that it had filed for bankruptcy in Sweden after it could not secure the financial conditions needed to continue in its existing form. The bankruptcy trustee was to determine the future of the businesses and assets. The 2024 cuts did not prevent the company’s later failure. Northvolt CEO Peter Carlsson said at the time: “For me personally, it remains key for Europe to have a homegrown battery industry, but it is a marathon to build such an industry.” That was the view of a company executive, not an independent assessment of the prospects for Europe’s battery sector.
Who bought Northvolt’s factories and what is operating now?
Lyten completed acquisitions of several Northvolt assets in separate transactions. Their status differs: completed asset purchases should not be confused with a project still under negotiation, and a restart announcement is not the same as proof of commercial output.

Lyten’s Swedish acquisition announcement said it planned to restart the sites and expected commercial cell sales from Ett in the second half of 2026. That was a forecast, not a report that sales had begun. Lyten’s operations and facilities page says Ett manufacturing has restarted and ramp-up is ongoing, but does not establish commercial delivery volumes. Lyten also said it planned more than 600 additional hires over 12 months; this is a forward-looking company plan, not a confirmed hiring result.
For Poland, Lyten’s Northvolt Dwa announcement gives the completion date and facility description. For Germany, its Northvolt Drei update describes the exclusive MoU rather than a closed sale.

What happened to the affected workers?
The approximately 1,600 positions were announced as expected redundancies in September 2024. Northvolt’s Swedish bankruptcy followed in March 2025 and caused a separate wave of uncertainty and displacement. The available figures do not establish how many people affected by the later bankruptcy were distinct from those included in the earlier announced cuts, so the two groups should not be added into a single total.
The European Parliament reported that it approved €8.5 million in support intended to help dismissed Northvolt workers re-enter the labour market. This is worker assistance, not a bailout or financing for Northvolt. The Parliament’s announcement explains the purpose of that support.

Was Northvolt’s failure a sign that Europe cannot make batteries?
Northvolt’s bankruptcy happened amid wider pressure on battery manufacturing, but sector-wide challenges alone do not establish why this particular company became insolvent. In a 2026 resolution, the European Parliament cited high energy and capital costs, production delays, market distortions and competition from third countries as pressures on the European battery industry. It also stated that China accounted for more than 80% of global battery production. These are Parliament’s industry-level figures and analysis, not a complete explanation of Northvolt’s bankruptcy. The resolution announcement provides that context.
What “not the end” means for Northvolt
Northvolt AB’s bankruptcy and the later restart of some facilities are different events. Lyten’s acquisitions preserved ownership of certain assets under a new owner; the reported restart at Ett means industrial activity there has resumed in Lyten’s account. Neither fact means the original company continued as before, that every Northvolt project was acquired, or that forecast sales and hiring have already occurred.
