Nitrogen Prices Remain in Focus After Iran Conflict

Urea prices spiked after the Iran conflict disrupted fertilizer trade and production, but the WTO reported a near-return to pre-war levels by July. The spring peak is not an October price quote.

Nitrogen fertilizer prices surged after conflict disrupted trade through the Strait of Hormuz, regional production and gas supplies—but the April spike is not an October price quote. The latest dated price account cited here is the World Trade Organization’s July update, which said urea had almost returned to pre-conflict levels after doubling. An October benchmark is not established by the available sources.

What happened to urea prices after the Strait of Hormuz disruption?

Urea is the main price reference in this story: the World Bank describes it as the most widely used nitrogen fertilizer. The dated observations below show both the sharp spring increase and why it should not be carried forward as the current price.

Date and source Reported price movement How to read it
March 2026 — World Bank Group, Commodity Markets Outlook, April 2026 Urea averaged $725 per metric ton, nearly 55% above February. A monthly average reported in the April outlook, not a current retail or local farm-input quote.
April 2026 — World Bank Group, April price update Urea was above $850 per metric ton, up 80% since February. A dated April observation; it is not an October benchmark.
10 July 2026 — World Trade Organization, data blog Urea prices had almost returned to pre-war levels after doubling. The update describes the subsequent direction, but gives no absolute price in the cited summary.

Separately, the World Bank reported that its fertilizer price index rose more than 12% quarter-on-quarter in 2026 Q1. That index covers fertilizer prices broadly; it is not interchangeable with the urea price observations above. The available dated reports do not establish an October urea benchmark, so buyers and household budget planners should check a current local quote rather than assume either the April peak or July direction describes today’s price.

Why did nitrogen fertilizer prices rise?

The shock operated through connected trade and production channels. Disruption around the Strait of Hormuz constrained a route important to fertilizer exports, while damage, suspended operations and reduced gas supplies affected production. The International Fertilizer Association’s May 2026 outlook says the countries exposed in its analysis accounted for 34% of global urea trade and 23% of global ammonia trade in 2024. Those are trade shares for the countries covered in the outlook—not a claim that those percentages of all fertilizer shipments necessarily passed through the Strait at a particular time.

Shipping and plant disruptions tightened supply

The World Bank’s April 2026 outlook reported that Iran had ceased ammonia production; Qatar suspended urea, ammonia and sulfur production after facility damage; and India reduced urea and ammonia production following lower liquefied natural gas supplies. These disruptions added production constraints to the shipping shock.

Gas costs connect the shock to producers beyond the Gulf

Natural gas accounts for an estimated 60–80% of nitrogen fertilizer production costs, according to the International Fertilizer Association’s 2026 outlook. Because gas is a major production input, supply or price disruption can affect nitrogen producers outside the region as well as those directly exposed to transport interruptions.

Will fertilizer prices fall in 2027?

In its April 2026 outlook, the World Bank forecast that urea prices would rise nearly 60% year over year in 2026 and fall about 25% in 2027. The projected easing depended on Middle East exports recovering and gas prices moderating. It was a forecast published at that time, not a report of what ultimately happened. Prolonged shipping constraints, renewed conflict, export restrictions or higher gas prices could push prices above that outlook.

The WTO’s July account that prices had almost returned to pre-war levels after doubling shows that the April surge was followed by a substantial reversal. It does not, by itself, settle what prices will be in October or in 2027.

Could the fertilizer shock affect food costs?

Fertilizer is one link in a longer chain: energy and fertilizer costs can affect planting inputs and yields, which can then influence agricultural commodity prices and food inflation. The Food and Agriculture Organization’s 2026 technical brief and May policy summary describe these as risks and pathways; they do not establish that the conflict alone caused a particular later food-price outcome.

In its May 20, 2026, recommendations, FAO called for alternative trade routes, avoiding export restrictions and emergency intercropping of cereals and legumes to reduce nitrogen fertilizer use. FAO Chief Economist Máximo Torero also urged countries to build capacity and resilience to the disruption. For household finances, the practical implication is uncertainty and a possible lag: a fertilizer shock does not translate automatically or immediately into a specific grocery-price increase.
