NPower is a nonprofit that offers free technology training and career support to help young adults and military-connected people from communities facing barriers to entry pursue careers in IT. Its programs range from foundational training to more specialized options, but availability, eligibility and program features vary by location and cohort.

What is NPower?

NPower is a national nonprofit focused on technology training and economic opportunity. The organization states its mission this way: “We empower young adults and military connected individuals to thrive in the digital economy through transformative IT training, creating pathways to economic prosperity.” NPower’s About page says it has offered foundational, intermediate and advanced career training to more than 12,000 graduates; the page does not specify a measurement cutoff in the surfaced text. NPower also says it aims to serve 15,000 people annually by 2030, a future goal rather than a result already achieved.

What training and support does NPower offer?

NPower describes its model as free technology training combined with job-placement support and ongoing career advancement. The specific curriculum and services depend on the program. NPower’s audited 2023 financial statements describe Tech Fundamentals as virtual classroom and internship training. They also describe elements of advanced cybersecurity programming, including Security+ certification, mentoring, career-development workshops, placement assistance, personal-development and social support, and an alumni network. These are dated program descriptions, not a promise that every current class includes every element.

Tech Fundamentals

Tech Fundamentals is presented as an entry pathway. The Virginia application page describes it as free and virtual, but it includes a class start date of February 5, 2024, so that page is not a reliable source for current dates or enrollment instructions. Check NPower’s current application information for the region and cohort you are considering.

Path2Tech cloud training

NPower’s Path2Tech page describes a 12-week virtual cloud program for people with professional technology experience or eligible NPower alumni. After the course, participants may have opportunities to pursue AWS Cloud Practitioner and AWS Solutions Architect – Associate certifications. The page’s eligibility language also notes technology-knowledge preferences. This specialized option is not interchangeable with an entry-level program; check the live page for current enrollment and certification details.

Is NPower training free?

NPower says its training is free. That does not establish that every NPower offering is available in every area or that every person will qualify. Confirm the cost, eligibility rules and any program-specific requirements with the current application page for the course and location you want.

Who can apply?

NPower’s stated focus is young adults and military-connected individuals from communities that have faced barriers to entry. Actual eligibility is program- and location-specific. For example, a surfaced Virginia Tech Fundamentals application page lists requirements for veterans and military spouses, including age, military status, work authorization and regional availability, but its February 2024 start date makes it dated evidence—not current application guidance. Use the live page for your region rather than assuming those rules apply everywhere.

  • Check the current program page for the location where you live.
  • Confirm age, military-affiliation, work-authorization and other eligibility requirements for that particular cohort.
  • For specialized training such as Path2Tech, check whether prior experience or alumni status is required.
  • Verify the cohort dates, delivery format and any stated certification opportunities before applying.

What jobs can NPower graduates pursue?

NPower’s training is intended to create pathways into IT, and its published program descriptions include foundational and advanced training, including cybersecurity and cloud pathways. The material cited here does not provide a definitive list of job titles or establish that completing a course qualifies every graduate for a particular role. The relevant opportunities will depend on the program, a participant’s experience and credentials, and employer demand.

Does NPower help with job placement?

Yes. NPower describes job-placement support as part of its approach, and its audited 2023 statements identify placement assistance among the elements of advanced cybersecurity programming. Placement assistance is not the same as a guaranteed job offer. Ask the specific program what career services it currently provides, how long support continues, and what outcomes it tracks.

How should you interpret NPower’s outcome figures?

NPower publishes graduation, employment-or-education and salary-change figures, but two surfaced versions of its official website show different numbers. Neither surfaced presentation gives a clear cohort or measurement period, and the figures are not independently verified in the material cited here.

Official page version Graduation rate Graduates employed or continuing education Average salary increase
NPower overview page, accessed 2026 81% of enrolled students 80% of graduates 300% or more
Another surfaced NPower homepage version, accessed 2026 80% of enrolled students 71% of graduates 220%

The different figures should not be combined or treated as a single current rate. The surfaced pages do not explain the discrepancy or state the underlying methodology and reporting periods. If these numbers matter to your decision, ask NPower for the cohort, timeframe, definitions and calculation method behind the figures for the specific program you are considering.

How to assess whether an NPower program fits

Compare the actual program page—not just the organization-wide description—against your goals and circumstances.

  • Experience level: Determine whether the course is an entry pathway or expects prior IT experience or alumni status.
  • Training and credentials: Check the curriculum and whether a certification opportunity is included or pursued after the course.
  • Format and schedule: Confirm whether instruction is virtual, in person or mixed, and verify the current duration and cohort dates.
  • Location and eligibility: Check the rules for your region; NPower does not describe one universal set of requirements.
  • Career support: Ask which placement and career-advancement services are part of that cohort, and what they do—and do not—promise.
