Myint and fellow activist Htin Kyaw Oo diverted a Thai Airways flight to Kolkata in November 1990; nearly eight years later, Myint and Thin Thin Aung founded Mizzima in New Delhi. In August 2018, Mizzima announced a content-sharing agreement with India’s public broadcaster, Prasar Bharati. The announcement establishes that an MoU was reported signed then, but not whether the arrangement remains active today.
Who is Soe Myint?
Soe Myint is a Myanmar journalist and pro-democracy activist who co-founded Mizzima with Thin Thin Aung while the pair were in exile in India. Mizzima’s 2015–2016 media kit says Myint was a student activist at Yangon University during the 1988 uprising and was detained after the military coup. It says he later stayed near the Thai–Myanmar border and continued his activism. These biographical details come from Mizzima’s own materials.
In an interview published by Mizzima on 8 August 2021, Myint described the organization’s original purpose as providing timely information to people in Myanmar and abroad about conditions under military rule, and about democracy and human-rights movements. The interview is available on Mizzima’s founder page.
Why did Soe Myint hijack a plane?
On 10 November 1990, Myint and Htin Kyaw Oo diverted a Thai Airways flight bound for Yangon to Kolkata. Mizzima’s media kit says they were unarmed and intended to draw attention to Myanmar’s democracy movement. Nandita Haksar, who later identified herself as Myint’s lawyer, also describes the diversion as a protest against military rule. Calling it a political protest explains the stated motive; it does not make the act harmless. Passengers and crew were aboard, and Myint faced criminal proceedings in India.

Mizzima’s media kit says Myint was detained in Kolkata, spent three months in Dum Dum Central Jail, and was later acquitted by an Indian court. Haksar recounts his arrest and the legal defense in her account. No court judgment is cited here, so the account of the acquittal is attributed to those sources: Mizzima’s media kit and Haksar’s account.
What is Mizzima, and how did it start?
Mizzima is a Myanmar-focused media organization. According to its history, Myint and Thin Thin Aung established it in New Delhi in August 1998, while both were in exile and after their involvement in the 1988 pro-democracy uprising. The organization says it was created to report on Myanmar for audiences at home and abroad while the country was under military rule. Haksar’s account describes an early exile news service operating with limited resources.

Mizzima says it worked from exile for nearly 15 years before registering in Myanmar in 2012. That timeline comes from the organization’s own history rather than an independent audit. Its account of its founding and purpose appears on Mizzima’s founder page.
What changed after the 2021 coup?
A 2024 Asia Media Centre profile says the military regime shut Mizzima’s free-to-air television channel after the 1 February 2021 coup, while the organization continued publishing and broadcasting from locations inside and outside Myanmar. This is a dated description, not a current operational audit; it should not be read as confirming the organization’s exact status in 2026. See the Asia Media Centre profile.

What is the Mizzima–Prasar Bharati partnership?
On 24 August 2018, Mizzima announced that Mizzima Media Company Limited and Prasar Bharati had signed a memorandum of understanding in New Delhi. The announcement described planned content sharing in culture, entertainment, education, science, news, sports, and other areas of mutual interest. Mizzima’s release quotes Myint expressing gratitude for support in India since the organization was founded there in 1998.
Prasar Bharati describes itself as an autonomous statutory body established by an Act of Parliament and India’s public broadcaster. The parties therefore have distinct roles: Mizzima is focused on Myanmar coverage, while Prasar Bharati is India’s public broadcaster. The 2018 announcement documents the reported MoU and its stated scope; it does not establish how much content was exchanged or whether the arrangement is still operating. Read Mizzima’s 24 August 2018 announcement and Prasar Bharati’s description of the organization.
