Boeing said many Chinese customers would not accept their planes under the tariff environment. The interruption was followed by a reported delivery restart after the two countries temporarily rolled back most tariffs, and in May 2026 Boeing confirmed a new 200-aircraft order from China.
How the planes ended up turning back
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| March 2025 | Three new 737 MAX aircraft flew from Seattle to Boeing’s Zhoushan completion center near Shanghai for final interior work and customer paint schemes. |
| April 2025 | After tariffs escalated, Reuters tracked an aircraft departing Zhoushan for the United States. It was later identified with Xiamen Airlines livery. Reuters reported that at least three aircraft had returned to the United States by June. |
| May 2025 | The United States and China agreed to roll back most tariffs for 90 days. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg expected deliveries to Chinese airlines to resume in June, and Reuters tracked a Xiamen-liveried 737 MAX leaving Seattle on a China-delivery route. |
| May 2026 | Boeing confirmed a 200-aircraft order from China after the Trump–Xi summit, according to the Associated Press. |
Zhoushan is where Boeing completes aircraft before handover; the planes that returned were not ordinary factory-bound aircraft but jets staged for Chinese airline customers.
Did China formally ban Boeing deliveries?
The early reporting did not establish an official Chinese government ban. Reuters said Beijing had made no official comment confirming one at the time. Industry sources told the news agency that tariffs could still make aircraft imports effectively unworkable, even without a formal prohibition. The distinction matters: the aircraft physically returned, but that alone does not prove a formally announced ban.
Why Boeing customers would not take delivery
Boeing later said many Chinese customers had indicated they would not accept deliveries because of tariffs. Ortberg told Reuters, “Due to the tariffs, many of our customers in China have indicated that they will not take delivery.” He added, “We’re not going to continue to build aircraft for customers who will not take them.”

Boeing CFO Brian West said customers were asking for additional aircraft, raising the possibility of finding alternative buyers for jets caught in the disruption. That would not necessarily be a simple transfer: aircraft are configured around an airline’s selected cabin, and Boeing would also have to address contractual commitments. The reporting described resale as an option under consideration, not an effortless or completed reassignment.
What Boeing’s inventory filing showed
In a filing covering the period through March 31, 2025, Boeing reported approximately 35 pre-2023 737-8 aircraft in inventory, including approximately 25 intended for Chinese customers and scheduled for delivery during 2025. The company said the effect of trade tensions on China deliveries was unclear. These figures describe the inventory in that filing, not necessarily every aircraft that could have been affected by the dispute.

What changed after the temporary tariff rollback
Following the May 12, 2025 agreement to roll back most tariffs for 90 days, Reuters reported that Ortberg expected China deliveries to restart in June and tracked a China-bound aircraft leaving Seattle. That was a signal of resumed deliveries, not confirmation that every delayed aircraft had been handed over.

The Associated Press reported on May 15, 2026, that Boeing confirmed a 200-aircraft order from China. Boeing did not disclose aircraft models or further order details in that report. Trump separately said China had reserved the right to buy as many as 750 aircraft. The 750 figure is Trump’s description of a possible purchase right; it is not the same as Boeing’s confirmed 200-aircraft order.
