What Netflix has confirmed about Basic
Netflix’s current US Plans and Pricing help page says, “The Basic plan has been discontinued.” It lists Standard with ads, Standard, and Premium. That page is specific to the US and says prices and extra-member eligibility can vary by location or third-party package. A customer’s available choices therefore depend on their market and account.

The clearest dated rollout update is Netflix’s Q2 2024 shareholder letter, published July 18, 2024. Netflix said the Basic phase-out had taken place in the UK and Canada and would start in the US and France. That is a historical status update, not a current rollout schedule, and it does not document each subscriber’s notice, deadline, or resulting account status. The evidence supports a phase-out of the plan, not a claim that all affected accounts were automatically canceled.
What happens to your account when Basic ends?
A plan ending and a membership ending are not interchangeable. The sources establish that Netflix discontinued Basic and describe the phase-out in named markets; they do not establish what happened to every member’s account or what replacement plan, if any, was assigned in each case. Your account-specific notice and the membership details shown in Netflix are the relevant evidence for your situation.

- Read any Netflix email or in-account notice for the stated date and available options.
- Open your Netflix account and check the plan and billing details. If you subscribe through a bundle or payment partner, check that provider’s account as well.
- If you are charged after the plan change, review Payment History to see the recorded charge and applicable taxes.
How to cancel Netflix yourself
If you do not want to continue with another plan, Netflix’s cancellation guidance says to cancel through Manage your membership. Signing out or deleting the app does not end a membership. Netflix says some payment methods and bundles must be canceled through the payment partner instead.
- Sign in to Netflix and open Manage your membership.
- Select Cancel, then select Finish Cancellation.
- Look for Netflix’s confirmation email. If there is no cancellation option, check whether your payment partner handles cancellation.
Netflix says that if you cancel with time left in the billing period, you can keep watching until that period ends. If the account is on hold, cancellation closes it immediately. Netflix charges monthly on the signup date; a time-zone difference can shift the billing date by one day, and a charge may appear several days after that date.

Which plans does Netflix list on its US page?
The following figures and features are from Netflix’s US Plans and Pricing page, checked October 8, 2026. They are not global prices or a promise that a particular former Basic member can select each plan. Netflix says pricing and eligibility can vary by location or third-party package, so check the country selector and the options shown for your account.

Why Basic with Adverts is not the same as Basic
Netflix announced Basic with Adverts on October 13, 2022, as a separate, lower-priced ad-supported plan. At launch it was announced for 12 countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK, and the US. Netflix said then that its existing plans and members would not be impacted by that launch. That statement concerned the 2022 introduction of Basic with Adverts; it was not a promise that the separate, ad-free Basic plan would continue indefinitely.

Check the charge and the cancellation date
Netflix’s Billing and Payments guidance says monthly billing is based on the signup date and that Payment History shows prior charges and applicable taxes. If a charge or date looks different after a plan change, compare the account’s plan details, notices, and payment history. Those general billing rules alone cannot establish your account’s last viewing date, refund, proration, or replacement plan.

In its July 18, 2024 shareholder letter, Netflix said its ads member base grew 34% sequentially in Q2 2024, in a discussion of the ad tier and the Basic phase-out. That is Netflix’s figure for growth in its ads member base from the prior quarter; it is not the percentage of Basic members who switched plans. The letter does not provide a count of Basic members whose whole accounts were canceled or who selected a replacement plan.
