A seven-page document dated March 13, 2015, was filed in court in April 2025 as Tony Hsieh’s purported will. Its authenticity and origin remain disputed. A court-appointed examiner analyzed its physical features but could not determine when it was written; the available reporting does not establish a final court ruling on its authenticity or validity.
What is the document filed as Tony Hsieh’s will?
Two law firms filed the seven-page document in court in April 2025 and sought its admission as Hsieh’s will. It bears the date March 13, 2015. Those details describe the document and how it was presented to the court; they do not establish that Hsieh wrote or signed it, or that it is legally valid. TechCrunch reported on the filing on April 23, 2025.
What does the purported will say?
The reporting available does not establish enough verified detail about the document’s full contents to responsibly summarize its provisions or say what wishes it expresses. The fact that it was filed as Hsieh’s will is not proof that the document reflects his final wishes.
Is Tony Hsieh’s will real?
Its authenticity is contested, and the available reporting does not show a final court decision resolving the question. Lawyers for Hsieh’s father’s estate have alleged that the document is forged. That is a claim made by a party to the dispute, not an established court finding. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported the allegation on December 16, 2025.

What did the forensic examiner find?
Court-appointed examiner Gerald LaPorte examined physical characteristics of the document, including its ink, paper, font, creases, and staple holes. He could not determine when it was written. His inability to date it does not, on its own, establish whether it is genuine or forged.
LaPorte’s report was refiled publicly on August 4, 2026, after an earlier version had been sealed, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s August 10, 2026 report, updated August 12. The reported examination addressed physical features and dating; it does not settle the legal question of validity.

Where did the document come from?
The route by which the document surfaced remains unclear in the reporting. A June 2025 filing reportedly shed light on a man said to have possessed it, but the lawyers who filed the document reportedly still did not know how he knew Hsieh. That account does not establish a verified chain of custody. The Review-Journal covered the filing on June 24, 2025.

Lawyers for Hsieh’s father’s estate reported difficulty verifying witnesses named in the document. In one inquiry, property managers reportedly found no record that two named witnesses lived at the associated properties. This is a reported finding from the estate lawyers’ investigation, not proof that the witnesses did not exist or that their signatures were fabricated. The Review-Journal reported on the witness questions on July 31, 2025.
