Gráinne Gallanagh’s account of FIFO work in Western Australia was a trade-off: covered expenses helped her save, and a week off gave her time to travel, but long shifts, early starts, summer heat and flies made the job demanding. These were her experiences in a particular role reported in 2024—not a guarantee of the pay, roster or conditions in other FIFO jobs.
Why Gallanagh took on FIFO work
PerthNow reported on 3 September 2024 that Gallanagh, identified as Miss Universe Ireland, had moved to Perth with her fiancé in 2023 and was working 12-hour shifts at a Western Australian mine site—a sharp change from her previous work on the catwalk. The report described her experience and comments about the role; it does not establish her current employment status.
For Gallanagh, the strongest financial attraction was the opportunity to save. She said food and travel were covered, making it easier to put money aside. PerthNow did not specify the precise terms or value of those covered expenses, so her account should not be read as a standard FIFO pay or benefits package.

With some costs taken care of, Gallanagh said she found it easier to save. That benefit depends on which expenses an employer covers and what a worker spends on the rest; her comments do not provide a general estimate of FIFO earnings or savings.

A week off felt like a mini holiday
Gallanagh valued having seven days off in a row, describing the break as a “mini holiday every fortnight.” It gave her time away from work that she could use for travel. This was the roster she reported experiencing, not a schedule that can be assumed for every FIFO job.
Her colleagues made a nervous start easier
Starting in an unfamiliar, mostly male environment made her anxious. “I was so nervous about starting this job and how I would be received in an environment where I had no idea what I was doing and it was mostly men,” she said, according to PerthNow.

Her experience with coworkers was more welcoming than she had feared: “But I was so pleasantly surprised, they have genuinely been so unbelievably patient, helpful, kind and have made me laugh every single day.” Extra.ie also reported her positive comments about the people she worked with. Her account describes her own workplace, not every mine-site culture.
The drawbacks she described
Long shifts and early starts
The reported schedule involved 12-hour shifts. Gallanagh also cited early starts and said she could feel as though she was “always at work.” The block of time off was valuable, but it came alongside long working days.

Heat and flies in summer
Hot summer conditions and flies were among the challenges she mentioned. PerthNow reported that she drove an air-conditioned truck to bring workers supplies or tools and, in hot weather, delivered icy poles to people working in the field. Those duties add context to her account; they should not be taken as a description of every FIFO worker’s job.
It was not the right fit for every kind of Australia trip
Gallanagh did not recommend FIFO for people who wanted to relax, travel around and simply enjoy Australia. Her warning reflected how demanding she found the lifestyle, despite the time off she valued.

What her account can—and cannot—tell someone weighing FIFO
Gallanagh’s experience shows why the trade-off can look different from one worker to another: covered costs and a substantial break suited her goals, while the hours and working conditions were difficult. Her account is a personal report, not evidence of typical FIFO pay, roster patterns, benefits or workplace culture. Anyone assessing a particular role would need to check that job’s actual schedule, covered expenses, duties and conditions rather than assume they match hers.
In Extra.ie’s 4 September 2024 account, Gallanagh advised people considering a move to Australia: “You need to go into it with a realistic mindset and a plan.” That was advice about making a major move, not professional migration or employment guidance.

Gallanagh’s reported mine-site work ended in 2024
Evoke reported on 9 July 2024 that Gallanagh had worked on a construction mine site for about a year and was leaving the job. It quoted her farewell post saying it was the first time she went to work and “didn’t have an ounce of anxiety or stress.” Extra.ie also reported in September 2024 that she and her fiancé had continued working beyond their initial visa-related work requirement.
