The Art of the SNL Portrait is a published hardcover by longtime Saturday Night Live photographer Mary Ellen Matthews—not a book readers need to preorder. Abrams lists its publication date as March 4, 2025. The 272-page volume gathers more than 200 color portraits and behind-the-scenes photographs of the show’s hosts and musical guests.
What’s in the book?
Matthews has photographed SNL for more than two decades. The images in the collection include the portraits used as the show’s “bumpers”—the pictures that transition broadcasts to and from commercial breaks. The Associated Press describes the collection as a look at those portraits and the work behind them.
Abrams says the hardcover includes a foreword by SNL founder and executive producer Lorne Michaels, a conversation with Matthews, and a thumbnail index of images with captions by the photographer. Abrams’ official book listing provides the full bibliographic details.

Matthews has described the weekly portrait work as a creative challenge: “I love doing it, and it’s such a challenge each week to do it again and do it better or do it different.” The quotation appeared in a Yahoo Entertainment/Rolling Stone report about her appearance on The Tonight Show; the original interview was not separately reviewed.
