In September 2024, eight large cinema chains in the United States and Canada announced plans to invest more than $2.2 billion in theater modernization over three years. Ziplines and pickleball were reported as possible attractions at some theaters—not as a universal promise or a defined share of that investment. The announcement focused mainly on better projection, sound, seating, food service, and facility upgrades.
What the $2.2 billion announcement covered
On September 19, 2024, the National Association of Theatre Owners—now Cinema United—said eight major North American chains planned to invest more than $2.2 billion over the following three years. Cinema United said the chains represented more than 21,000 screens and 67% of the box office. The figure was a combined plan, not $2.2 billion per chain and not a dedicated budget for unusual attractions. Cinema United’s announcement described upgrades to the moviegoing experience and theater facilities.
The chains named were AMC Entertainment, Regal Cinemas, Cinemark USA, Cineplex, Marcus Theatres, B&B Theatres, Harkins Theatres, and Santikos Entertainment. The eight companies that reported represented more than 1,600 locations across the United States and Canada, according to Cinema United. The association’s statement did not allocate the overall figure among individual companies or locations.
Are theaters actually adding ziplines and pickleball?
Those examples came from contemporaneous reporting, not the association’s official list of investment categories. Gizmodo, citing Variety, reported that some theaters intended to add attractions including zip lines, bowling alleys, and pickleball courts. Gizmodo’s report does not mean all eight chains—or every location within a chain—committed to offering them.

The available announcements do not identify which specific venues installed or opened zip lines or pickleball courts. Treat them as reported examples of possible location-level entertainment, not confirmed amenities at a theater near you. Check a venue’s current website or contact it directly before making plans around a particular attraction.
What upgrades did the chains officially highlight?
Cinema United’s announcement put core cinema and building improvements at the center of the plan. It cited laser projection, immersive sound, more comfortable seats, improved food and beverage, and family entertainment such as arcades and bowling. It also mentioned practical building work, including air conditioning, lighting, signage, and carpeting. These are the categories named by the association; they do not establish that every chain selected every upgrade.

The official announcement was broad rather than a venue-by-venue project list.
How the investment figures have changed since 2024
Cinema United has since published broader figures for theater reinvestment. They show substantial reported spending across the industry, but they are not a project-by-project accounting of the original three-year pledge and do not confirm that any specific attraction opened.
