The original WWE Million Dollar Championship was not shown to be worth $1 million. Ted DiBiase later estimated its value at $40,000 when it was created, according to a 2013 WWE retrospective. That is an attributed historical estimate—not an independent appraisal or a current market valuation.
Was the Million Dollar Championship actually worth $1 million?
No available valuation supports a real-world price of $1 million. “Million Dollar” was part of the title’s branding and DiBiase’s character: WWE recounts that he wanted a championship he could call worth more than the WWE Championship. In its 2013 account, WWE quoted DiBiase saying, “The value of the title when it was created was $40,000.” The figure describes what he recalled the belt being worth when created in 1988; it is not a verified purchase price, jeweler’s invoice, or appraisal.
DiBiase also said he thought the belt was worth more later, but WWE’s article gives no later figure. There is no sound basis here for treating the title as a million-dollar asset or for stating its present collectible value.
What was the original belt made of?
DiBiase described the original as gold plated and set with about 700 cubic zirconia stones. He did not describe it as solid gold or diamond-set. His explanation, quoted by WWE, was: “It was gold plate, which is not much, but all of the stones are cubic zirconia, which means they’re almost diamonds.” He added, “And there’s like 700 of them in the title.” These are his recollections, not a materials analysis by an independent expert.

How the Million Dollar Championship came about
WWE’s retrospective says DiBiase tried to acquire the WWE Championship through Andre the Giant after Andre defeated Hulk Hogan on The Main Event in February 1988. WWE President Jack Tunney voided the transaction and declared the championship vacant. DiBiase then lost the WrestleMania IV tournament final to Randy Savage.
DiBiase later credited WWE official Pat Patterson with suggesting that he create his own championship. WWE dates the creation effort to February 15, 1989, says DiBiase visited Betteridge Jewelers in Greenwich, Connecticut, as the custom belt was made, and places its television debut on a March 1989 episode of Superstars. The belt later figured in DiBiase’s rivalry with Jake Roberts. Virgil defeated DiBiase for it at SummerSlam 1991, and DiBiase subsequently reclaimed it. WWE’s profile says the custom title was never officially recognized by WWE’s leadership, so it should not be described as a recognized WWE world championship.

Where is the original Million Dollar Championship now?
Its current location has not been established. In the 2013 retrospective, WWE said DiBiase believed the original was at the company’s Stamford headquarters, but WWE’s search did not find it and located a replica in a warehouse instead. The article also recounted DiBiase’s account that he returned the belt to a WWE executive and later heard it had been found in a safe. WWE concluded that the location remained unknown at the time. Those conflicting recollections do not verify where the original is today.

| Comparison | Original championship | WWE Shop replica |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Custom belt associated with Ted DiBiase; WWE says it was never officially recognized by company leadership. | Retail replica listed as officially licensed. |
| Materials described | Gold plate and about 700 cubic zirconia stones, according to DiBiase as quoted by WWE. | Polyurethane strap, zinc-alloy plates, and acrylic rhinestones, according to the product listing. |
| Price evidence | DiBiase’s attributed estimate was $40,000 when created in 1988; no independent appraisal is established. | The listing showed $524.99 when checked for the cited account; retailer price and availability can change. |
The replica’s listed retail price is not a comparable valuation of the original. A retail product and a one-of-a-kind historical belt have different provenance, materials, and potential market conditions.

What the $40,000 figure does—and does not—tell you
- It is an estimate attributed to DiBiase. WWE quoted it in a retrospective published February 7, 2013; it is not presented as an independent appraisal.
- It refers to the belt’s value when created. It does not establish what the belt would sell for now.
- It does not validate the million-dollar name. The available account gives no million-dollar valuation.
- Inflation does not supply a collectible price. Adjusting a historical dollar figure would not account for ownership history, condition, authenticity, or demand, and would not establish current market value.
