What was Mike Jeffries charged with?
The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Jeffries, Matthew Smith and James Jacobson were arrested on October 22, 2024, after a federal grand jury returned a 16-count indictment. The charges include sex trafficking and interstate prostitution. The case is in the Eastern District of New York, docket No. 24-CR-423 (NJC). The Justice Department’s announcement identifies Jeffries as the former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch.
The indictment’s allegations are not court findings. Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson pleaded not guilty, according to the Associated Press. Each is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
What do prosecutors allege?
Prosecutors allege that the defendants and others recruited men for commercial sex events at locations in the United States and abroad between December 2008 and March 2015. The indictment describes a referral and interview process and alleges that modeling opportunities were promised or implied. Prosecutors further allege that some men were isolated from their personal belongings and that sexual contact occurred when they did not or could not consent. These are allegations, not established facts. The Justice Department’s case summary says recruits included aspiring models and financially vulnerable men; at least one was 19. Some, prosecutors say, had worked at Abercrombie stores or modeled for the company.

Is Mike Jeffries going to trial?
As of its August 21, 2026 report, the Associated Press said the trial was slated for late October 2026. That was a reported schedule, not confirmation of the current calendar. Trial dates can change, so consult the Eastern District of New York case information or the live court docket for any later scheduling update. The competency ruling means the judge found Jeffries competent to stand trial; it does not decide whether he is guilty.
