Business abbreviations are easiest to decode when you know what kind of thing they name: a role, a performance measure, a technology, or a payment process. This practical glossary groups common terms by workplace use and explains what each means. Definitions can vary by industry or source document, so check the relevant specialist glossary when a term appears in a contract, regulated report, or technical policy. ICAEW’s A–Z directory notes that entries can change and should be checked for suitability; NIST’s glossary likewise ties some terms to specific source publications.

Leadership and organization abbreviations

Executive titles identify areas of responsibility, but their precise boundaries depend on the organization. A title is not a guarantee that every employer assigns the same duties to that role.

Abbreviation Expansion Plain-language meaning
CEO Chief executive officer The senior executive responsible for overall management, major decisions, and strategic direction. ISACA describes the CEO as responsible for aligning the organization with its goals and objectives. ISACA Interactive Glossary
CFO Chief financial officer The executive leading financial management and financial-risk responsibilities. The exact remit varies by organization; NIST also records the expansion in a government-publication context. ISACA Interactive Glossary and NIST CSRC Glossary
CIO Chief information officer A senior leader responsible for information technology (IT), including aligning IT with business strategy and overseeing IT services and information. ISACA notes that the role may overlap with knowledge-related responsibilities. ISACA Interactive Glossary
CISO Chief information security officer The executive or senior leader responsible for enterprise information security. ISACA Interactive Glossary
CRO Chief risk officer The executive responsible for assessing and responding to risks affecting enterprise assets. ISACA Interactive Glossary
CTO Chief technology officer A senior technology leader focused on technical matters. Some organizations distinguish the CTO from the CIO; others use the titles in overlapping or nearly interchangeable ways. ISACA Interactive Glossary

CIO vs. CTO

There is no universal division of duties. A company may use CIO for enterprise IT services and alignment with business needs, and CTO for technical direction or product technology. Another employer may define the boundary differently. When evaluating a job description, follow its stated responsibilities rather than inferring them from the title alone.

Performance and financial measures

Abbreviation Expansion What it tells you
KPI Key performance indicator A quantifiable measure of progress toward a defined business goal. Section508.gov defines it as a metric used to measure progress and success toward a specific business goal or objective. A number on a dashboard is not automatically a KPI: it needs a goal or target it is meant to track. Section508.gov Glossary of Section 508 Terms
ROI Return on investment A way of assessing an investment’s return relative to its cost. The term’s expansion is established, but there is not one calculation convention that fits every context; identify the formula and period being used before comparing figures. NIST’s glossary points readers to source documents for context. NIST CSRC Glossary
MRR Monthly recurring revenue A recurring-revenue measure often used by subscription businesses. The exact rules for what revenue is included depend on the company’s reporting convention.
ARR Annual run rate An annualized revenue figure used in some business reporting. Do not assume it means recognized revenue for a completed year; check how the source defines the calculation.
CAC Customer acquisition cost The cost attributed to acquiring customers. Comparisons are meaningful only when the period, included costs, and customer count are defined consistently.
TCO Total cost of ownership An estimate of the full cost of owning or using an asset or service, rather than only its purchase price. Scope depends on the analysis.

The latter four expansions are included in Ortto’s general SaaS acronym reference, a secondary list rather than an authority for regulated definitions. Ortto: Your SaaS Acronyms Cheat Sheet

Technology, systems, and data

Abbreviation Expansion Meaning in practice
SaaS Software as a Service A cloud service model in which a customer uses applications running on a provider’s cloud infrastructure, commonly through a browser or program interface, without managing the underlying infrastructure. NIST attributes this definition to Special Publication 800-145. SaaS describes how software is delivered, not a particular software product. NIST CSRC Glossary
ERP Enterprise resource planning Business software and processes for coordinating organizational resources and activities. Specific product scope varies. Ortto: Your SaaS Acronyms Cheat Sheet
API Application programming interface A defined way for software components or services to communicate or request functions and data. The details depend on the interface.

Ortto includes ERP and API among its general SaaS and business terms. For technical, security, or governance meanings, use a glossary tied to the relevant standard or publication; ISACA’s glossary covers terms that cross business, IT, and governance.

Operations, contracts, and business information

Abbreviation Expansion Meaning in practice
EDI Electronic Data Interchange The standardized, machine-readable electronic exchange of business information between organizations or systems. This is the Federal Reserve’s payment and banking glossary context. Federal Reserve Financial Services glossary

Contract and operations acronyms can be highly field-specific. ICAEW’s broad directory includes business and financial terms alongside legal frameworks, industries, professional bodies, and regulators; use the source document or relevant specialist authority to confirm a term’s intended meaning. ICAEW: Business and financial abbreviations

Banking and payment abbreviations

These terms are specific to payment operations, particularly the U.S. Automated Clearing House network. The Federal Reserve Financial Services glossary is the relevant reference for these meanings. Federal Reserve Financial Services glossary

ACH Automated Clearing House A network used for direct and other electronic payments.

How to interpret an unfamiliar acronym

  1. Expand it at first use. Write the full term, then give a plain-language explanation of what it does or describes.
  2. Identify its category. Decide whether it names a role, metric, process, technology, business model, or agreement. This narrows the likely meaning.
  3. Read the surrounding context. The same letters may have different expansions across industries, companies, and source documents.
  4. Check the right authority. Use a specialist glossary for regulated financial, legal, payment, or technical terms. NIST advises consulting the identified source document for context; ICAEW cautions that entries can change and suitability should be checked.
  5. For a metric, find its definition. Confirm the goal, formula, reporting period, and what is included before comparing values. For a role, read the stated remit rather than relying on the title.

For broader alphabetical lookup, start with ICAEW’s business and financial abbreviations directory. For terms in information systems and governance, consult ISACA; for U.S. banking and payment operations, consult the Federal Reserve Financial Services glossary.
