Elon Musk denied that he was donating $45 million a month to support Donald Trump, but he did not say he was giving nothing: he said he was donating to America PAC at a much lower level. The $45 million figure came from earlier reporting about a planned monthly commitment, while later reports described disclosed contributions over different periods and to different groups.
What Musk said about the $45 million monthly figure
In an interview with Jordan Peterson, Musk said: “What’s been reported in the media is simply not true. I am not donating $45 million a month to Trump.” Cybernews reported the statement on July 24, 2024, and also reported Musk’s qualification that he was making donations to America PAC “at a much lower level.” Read together, those remarks deny the specific monthly amount—not donations to the PAC altogether. Where the $45 million figure came from
Mediaite’s July 23, 2024, coverage summarized earlier Wall Street Journal reporting that Musk planned to contribute about $45 million per month to America PAC. The report was attributed to sources familiar with the matter. It described a reported intention, not a verified series of monthly payments; the sources cited here do not independently establish that the planned amount was paid each month. Mediaite, July 23, 2024
What did Musk mean by “I don’t prescribe to a cult of personality”?
The quote appeared in coverage of the same Jordan Peterson interview. Cybernews reported Musk’s wording as: “I don’t prescribe to a cult of personality.” In context, it accompanied his response to reporting about the proposed monthly contribution. It should not be treated as evidence that he made no political donations: his separate statement acknowledged donations to America PAC at a lower level. Cybernews, July 24, 2024

What later campaign-finance reports showed
Later reports provide context about contributions, but they measure different periods and recipient groups from the July report of a prospective monthly plan.
| Report | Reported amount and scope | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Associated Press, October 16, 2024 | More than $70 million to America PAC over the summer | Summer contributions to one PAC, based on campaign-finance disclosures. AP report |
| WIRED, updated through November 25, 2024 | $281 million total: more than $238 million to America PAC and another $43 million to RBG PAC and other pro-Trump groups | A later cumulative total spanning America PAC and other groups. WIRED report |
The AP and WIRED figures are not interchangeable: one covers summer contributions to America PAC, while the other covers a longer period and a broader set of recipients. Neither, by itself, verifies the reported $45 million-per-month plan.
