Monzo closed all of its US accounts on June 8, 2026. Former customers can still contact Monzo about remaining funds, statements, tax forms, or suspicious transactions at [email protected]. Monzo says it transferred leftover balances to a recently used linked bank account where possible; otherwise, it sent balances over $1 by check.
When did Monzo close its US accounts?
Monzo’s US account closure is complete: the company’s support page says all Monzo US accounts closed on June 8, 2026. This applies to Monzo accounts in the United States; it does not mean Monzo is closing its UK accounts.
Why did Monzo leave the US?
Monzo described the exit as a strategic choice to focus on its UK home market and grow faster in Europe. In a March 31, 2026 Monzo Community post, staff member Adam Little wrote: “Where we’ve made a deliberate, strategic decision to focus on growing our home market and Europe and to step away from the US.” He also said Monzo had recently passed 15 million UK customers and received its European banking licence at the end of 2025. The company did not identify a more specific financial or regulatory cause in that announcement. Read Monzo’s announcement.
The exit should not be confused with Monzo’s earlier US banking arrangement. In October 2021, Monzo team member Thomas George said the US product operated with Sutton Bank because Monzo could not rely on obtaining its own US bank charter. That explains the historical operating model, not the 2026 closure decision or the steps for recovering money. Read the 2021 discussion.

What happened to money left in a Monzo US account?
According to Monzo’s post-closure instructions, the company transferred remaining balances, including accrued interest, to a recently used linked bank account when it could. If it could not make that transfer, it sent any remaining balance over $1 by check using the email address on file.
For a joint account, Monzo says the check was made out to both account holders and sent to one holder’s email address. These are the company’s general instructions; they do not confirm that a particular customer’s funds have arrived.

What should you do if you have not received or cannot use your check?
- Check your email inbox, Spam, and Junk folders for the check message. Monzo says the sender may appear as “Checkbook.io.”
- If the message is missing, or you cannot access or deposit the check, email [email protected] for help.
How can you access Monzo account statements?
Former customers who need statements should email [email protected] and ask Monzo for help accessing them.
How will former customers receive 2026 tax forms?
Monzo says customers who earned at least $10 in interest during tax year 2026 will receive a 1099-INT by mail by the standard tax deadline in 2027. If your mailing or contact information needs updating, contact Monzo by December 31, 2026.

What happens if money is sent to a closed Monzo account?
Monzo says new deposits or transfers to a closed account will be rejected and returned to the sender. If someone is due to pay you, give them details for another bank account instead. Monzo does not recommend a specific replacement account provider.
Could Monzo return to the US?
Monzo says it is stepping back from the US “for now,” but has not committed to returning or provided a timetable. Former customers should rely on its current support instructions for account-related questions.
