In its September 7, 2018 announcement, Square Enix Holdings identified Sherlock as COO of SQUARE ENIX LTD. in Europe and SQUARE ENIX, INC. in North America. The company gave his birth date as March 27, 1955, and his age as 63. Square Enix Holdings’ announcement does not say how he died.

Sherlock’s career at Square Enix
Square Enix Holdings said Sherlock joined the group in 2005 and held senior marketing roles in its European and American businesses before moving into operations leadership.

Earlier publishing and sales roles
Before Square Enix, Sherlock held senior roles at other game companies, according to Game Developer: president of international publishing at Acclaim Entertainment and executive vice president of sales and marketing at Sega Europe. Game Developer’s September 7, 2018 obituary is the source for those positions.
Phil Rogers’ tribute
Game Developer reported that Phil Rogers, then CEO of Square Enix Europe and America, paid tribute to Sherlock. The outlet quoted Rogers as saying: “It is with tremendous sorrow that we announce the passing of our great friend and colleague, Mike Sherlock.”

Rogers also described him as “a principled and charismatic leader who led by example,” and said Sherlock was “extremely proud of the progress and success we have shared over the years.” These remarks are reported by Game Developer as Rogers’ tribute.
