Meghnad Jagdishchandra Desai, the Indian-born economist, author and life peer known as Lord Desai, died in Delhi on 29 July 2025, aged 85. His career joined decades of teaching and research at the London School of Economics (LSE) with Labour and House of Lords politics, while his books ranged from Marxian economics to Indian history, cinema and culture.

From Vadodara to economics in Britain and the United States

Desai was born in Vadodara, Gujarat, on 10 July 1940. He studied at the University of Bombay before completing a doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. The Guardian obituary reports that he earned his PhD at 23 under economist Lawrence Klein.

His long academic career at LSE

Desai joined LSE as a lecturer in 1965, became a professor in 1983 and was made professor emeritus in 2003. LSE records that he taught econometrics, macroeconomics, Marxian economics and development economics. He also led the university’s Development Studies Institute from 1990 to 1995 and founded and led its Centre for the Study of Global Governance from 1992 to 2003.

Politics, peerage and public life

Desai was created a life peer on 5 June 1991 as Baron Desai of St Clement Danes. He held a Labour frontbench role before leaving party affiliation in 2020; in 2023, he moved to the House of Lords crossbenches.

His public work also extended beyond party politics. Humanists UK describes him as an advocate for secularism and human rights and notes his involvement with the All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group. He received India’s Padma Bhushan in 2008. Desai also worked with the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, which was involved in the Gandhi statue in Parliament Square, and supported the organization behind the Partition Museum in Amritsar.

Books that crossed economics, history and culture

Desai’s early books established his work in economic thought and methods: Marxian Economic Theory (1973), Applied Econometrics (1976) and Testing Monetarism (1981). The Guardian obituary says the last anticipated the demise of the money-supply targeting then pursued by Margaret Thatcher’s government.

The Guardian describes Marx’s Revenge: The Resurgence of Capitalism and the Death of Statist Socialism (2002) as perhaps Desai’s best-known contribution to economics. In the obituary’s account, Desai read Marx as arguing not that capitalism would collapse imminently, but that it could endure until its productive potential was exhausted. That is the obituary’s summary of Desai’s interpretation, not a settled consensus about Marx.

His other work moved well beyond economics. The range of representative titles includes:

  • The Rediscovery of India (2011), on Indian history and society.
