McLaren’s strategy has moved from tightening supply to planning for a broader range: CEO Nick Collins said in August 2025 that the company was reducing output to support residual values, while McLaren announced a £500 million UK investment programme and a performance SUV in September 2026. The SUV was not confirmed in Collins’s 2025 interview; it is a later company announcement.
Why did McLaren say it was cutting production?
In an interview published by Car and Driver on 17 August 2025, McLaren CEO Nick Collins said the company was reducing production from 3,000 cars in 2024 to 2,000 in 2025. He described the aim as keeping supply from exceeding demand so the cars would retain their residual values. Those totals and the rationale are Collins’s statements in the interview; the figures are not independently verified by the sources cited here.
Collins presented the reduction as a reset rather than a permanent ceiling: “It’s not that we’re going to stay static at that level,” he said, adding, “we want to get stable and then grow.” The logic is to prioritize demand and brand value before pursuing growth, rather than treating higher production as a goal by itself.
What did Collins say about design and cars with more than two seats?
In the same 2025 interview, Collins said McLaren needed to expand beyond two-seat models, but did not identify an SUV as the answer. He also argued that design needed greater emphasis because he saw insufficient differentiation among McLaren’s then-current mid-engine supercars. His description of the intended customer experience was: “More design, more technology, more quality, more attribute integrity, and a more rounded elevated experience.”

On powertrains, Collins described a “multi-propulsion” approach, with combustion engines and hybrids remaining prominent for a long time. He allowed that a future electric vehicle might make sense in a suitable geography, citing China as an example; that was interview commentary, not an announced EV programme.
Is McLaren making an SUV?
Yes. McLaren Automotive formally announced plans for a performance SUV in its 18 September 2026 investment announcement. A 22 September 2026 McLaren identity announcement also described the company’s growth beyond two-seat supercars. This is a later development than Collins’s 2025 comments about expanding beyond two seats.

How do the 2025 reset and 2026 expansion fit together?
The two announcements describe different stages of the strategy. The first emphasizes supply discipline and a more differentiated, supercar-centred brand; the second sets out investment in capacity and a new vehicle category. A production cut in one year and a plan to expand capability later are not inherently contradictory: the former addresses how much to build against demand, while the latter concerns facilities and the range McLaren intends to support.
