What the reported Microsoft pay figures include
TechRepublic reported on July 31, 2025, that leaked internal guidance listed the following compensation for Level 70. TechRepublic attributed the leak to documents first reported by Business Insider; Microsoft declined to comment, according to TechRepublic.

These amounts are reported figures from leaked guidance, not company-confirmed current policy. The report describes the maximum compensation calculation as theoretical. It would be misleading to add every stated maximum and present the result as routine or guaranteed pay: salary, bonus, annual stock awards, and a one-time hiring award are different components with different conditions and timing. Which engineering level does the $408,000 figure apply to?
The report describes Level 70 as Microsoft’s most senior “distinguished” employee level. Its role mapping places senior engineers at Level 63 and above, principal engineers at Level 65 and above, and partners at Level 68 and above. The $408,000 ceiling therefore refers to the reported Level 70 band, not to all senior or principal engineers.

Why location and level matter
The reported guidance ties compensation to both level and location. It describes “main” ranges for Redmond, Washington, and “high” ranges intended to attract talent in more expensive cities such as San Francisco. The report does not establish that the same figures apply uniformly across locations or roles.

- Annual stock: Review the award amount, vesting schedule, and the value expected to vest each year.
- Hiring awards: Treat on-hire stock or signing payments as one-time compensation, not recurring annual pay.
This breakdown matters because a large headline total may combine guaranteed salary with conditional bonus, stock whose value can change, and a hiring award that does not repeat. The reported guidance does not provide a complete offer or a population-wide picture of what Microsoft engineers receive.

The figures come from a July 2025 news report summarizing leaked documents, not a public Microsoft pay scale confirmed by the company. As of October 2026, the current official Level 70 pay band is unverified here; treat the numbers as reported 2025 guidance rather than a current guaranteed range.
