Maurice “Morry” Taylor Jr. built his reputation as a blunt, hands-on industrial operator who grew Titan through acquisitions, factory turnarounds and a bet on a different kind of agricultural tire-and-wheel assembly. He was Titan International’s CEO and chairman when a 2016 profile introduced him as the company’s “bold, brash” leader; that CEO title is historical, not current. Titan named Paul Reitz CEO and president effective January 1, 2017, while Taylor remained chairman at that time.
Why Morry Taylor became known as bold and brash
A 2016 profile by Jessie Scott in Agriculture.com / Successful Farming portrayed Taylor as unusually candid and combative by executive standards. His bluntness was part of his negotiating persona, and he was willing to describe his acquisition strategy in deliberately provocative terms: “We buy everybody’s junk,” the profile quoted him saying.
That style was paired with a practical operating philosophy. Taylor said he would move decision-makers closer to the work when he thought a factory was being poorly managed. Recalling one plant, he said: “When you looked at what was wrong, nobody knew what the hell was going on in the factory. So I shut the office down, moved everybody into the factory, and the dog-gone thing made money.” The anecdote is Taylor’s account of a particular turnaround, not a general measure of factory performance.
How Taylor’s route led to Titan
Titan’s roots predate Taylor. The company’s official history traces its heritage to Electric Wheel Company, founded in Quincy, Illinois, in 1890 to make steel wheels for farm implements, wagons and other equipment. Firestone acquired Electric Wheel in 1957.

Scott’s 2016 account says Taylor’s route into the business began with tool-and-die work and wheel-industry experience. In 1983, Taylor and Joseph Tannenbaum bought properties from Firestone and started Can-Am Industries. The profile describes subsequent purchases of wheel-making assets from Goodyear and French & Hecht, as well as an English partnership.
In 1990, MascoTech and the two partners completed a leveraged buyout that formed Titan Wheel International. In 1992, Taylor and MascoTech bought out Tannenbaum’s interest; the profile reported that Taylor then held 53%. Further acquisitions followed through the 1990s. In 2005, Titan agreed to manufacture and sell Goodyear Farm Tires in North America, with the arrangement later expanded to other regions, according to the profile.

The arc shows two complementary growth methods: buying assets and businesses to expand the product base, then changing operations where Taylor believed they were not working. The 2016 profile described Titan as having 44 production and distribution facilities worldwide and as doing nearly $2 billion in business. Those are dated characterizations from that profile, not current operating figures. Separately, Farm Equipment reported in a January 2025 article that Titan’s sales for its last completed fiscal year, 2023, were $1.8 billion; that figure refers to fiscal 2023, not current revenue.
Why Taylor pushed Titan’s LSW tires
Taylor argued that agricultural tire-and-wheel designs had stood still. “Tires and wheels in the industry that we serve hadn’t changed in 30 or 40 years,” he said in the 2016 profile. His response was Titan’s Low Sidewall (LSW) approach: a larger wheel paired with a lower tire sidewall.

The profile says Taylor assembled an engineering team and promoted the design to equipment manufacturers and farmers. It reported that Titan research suggested LSW assemblies could reduce power hop, road lope and soil compaction. Taylor made a broader claim: “Our low sidewall tires make every piece of equipment – whether it’s a tractor, combine, or sprayer – perform better.” These are Taylor’s and Titan’s reported claims, not conclusions from an independent controlled comparison.
The profile also recounts Titan’s field visits and a 90-day take-back offer as Taylor described them. Titan’s official history continues to identify LSW as part of its technology and product heritage, but that does not establish availability or compatibility for a particular machine today. Anyone evaluating an LSW assembly should check the exact machine, tire size and wheel combination with a qualified dealer, and assess the specific performance claim that matters for their operation.

When Taylor stopped being Titan’s CEO
The 2016 profile called Taylor CEO and chairman. On December 9, 2016, Titan announced that Paul Reitz would become CEO and president effective January 1, 2017, with Taylor continuing as chairman. The announcement establishes that leadership transition; the sources cited here do not establish Taylor’s current board role.

Taylor’s public identity fused an unvarnished style with an acquisition-led approach to industrial growth. The company’s history, however, is broader than one executive: its wheel-making lineage reaches back to 1890, while Taylor’s tenure brought acquisitions, operating changes and a high-profile push for LSW assemblies. His case is useful as a portrait of a particular business builder, but product-performance assertions and dated company scale figures should be read with their original attribution and time frame.
