What did the Kraken announce?
The Seattle Kraken said on April 18, 2022, that former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch and Seattle musician Macklemore had joined the NHL franchise’s minority investor group. The group was led by founder and majority owner David Bonderman and executive committee chair Samantha Holloway. The Kraken’s announcement and NHL.com’s report framed the additions around community engagement as well as hockey and music.
“We are fortunate to have an incredibly strong investor group which has guided the franchise over the last four years,” Holloway said in the announcement. Macklemore described the appeal of community this way: “The human spirit thrives on community.”
Did Marshawn Lynch drive a Zamboni?
Yes. On announcement day, Lynch drove a Zamboni at Kraken Community Iceplex. NHL.com reported that he drove fast and did donuts on the ice. “They should’ve known not to put me behind nothing with a steering wheel,” Lynch joked.

What roles did the investors expect to take on?
Macklemore: music and fan events
The Kraken said Macklemore would work with the team and Climate Pledge Arena to produce music events intended to serve the community and engage fans. The official announcement also noted his co-founding of The Residency, a regional hip-hop and youth development program, and his advocacy for racial and social justice.
Lynch: community engagement
The team said Lynch was expected to participate in its Hockey Is for Everyone campaign and community activism. It described both new investors as helping connect hockey fans, music lovers, and community members. Lynch said, “The thing is, I know Seattle looks out for and supports me too. It’s only right I continue to plant seeds and give back to the city.”

These were plans and descriptions published in April 2022; the announcement and NHL reports do not establish whether the initiatives were later completed. Kraken CEO Tod Leiweke added a lighthearted hint of what might follow: “Marshawn knows how to drive a Zamboni and Macklemore has a pretty good wrist shot. More to come!”

The announcement identifies Lynch and Macklemore as members of the minority investor group, but the cited reports do not disclose their individual investment amounts or ownership percentages. They therefore support saying the pair joined the group—not assigning either a specific stake, financial return, or current ownership status.
