SALT announced on 29 September 2022 that it had opened a seed funding round to support its digital boat-finance business. The company did not disclose a target or, in the available later reporting, a total raised. It said the money would go toward technology investment and operating costs as it prepared to launch its app.

What was SALT’s seed funding round?

It was a fundraising round opening announced by SALT, a UK fintech developing digital finance for leisure-boat purchases. In its 29 September 2022 company post, SALT said its app had been built and was undergoing testing, bank capital for lending had been secured, and regulatory approval was in process. The company presented the raise as a step toward a near-term app launch.

The announcement concerned financing for a financial-service business—not funding for boat manufacturing, shipping, or marine equipment. SALT said the round would support ongoing technology investment and operating costs.

How much did SALT raise?

The 2022 announcement did not state a target amount. The later reporting available here does not establish how much SALT ultimately raised or whether the round closed. International Boat Industry also reported the opening on 3 October 2022, but its accessible subscriber-only page does not provide financial terms.

Accordingly, the amount is undisclosed in the available reporting. The announcement is not evidence of a current investment offer, and it does not establish that the round remains open.

What happened after the announcement?

The milestones below are later developments, not facts that had already occurred when SALT announced the round in 2022.

Date Reported milestone
29 September 2022 SALT announced that its seed round was open, with an undisclosed target. It said proceeds would fund technology investment and operating costs.
3 October 2022 International Boat Industry reported the opening; the accessible subscriber-only page did not disclose round terms.
17 May 2024 Financial News reported FCA approval for consumer lending and continued interest in the seed round. That report does not establish the amount raised or whether the round closed.
12 December 2024 British Marine reported that SALT’s app had launched and that the company was lending. It described digital applications, finance quotes, transaction updates, and customer support.

What was SALT building?

SALT’s planned product was a digital boat-finance journey for leisure-boat purchases. The company describes open banking as part of that journey and says the app is intended to simplify applications. That is SALT’s own product description, not independent evidence that its service performs better than alternatives.

The 2022 post did not disclose loan rates, repayment periods, eligibility rules, or lender pricing. Those details should not be inferred from the fundraising announcement.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish

  • Established: SALT said it opened a seed funding round on 29 September 2022 and intended to use funds for technology investment and operating costs.
  • Not established: the target, total raised, valuation, investor count, or whether the round closed.
  • Separate later milestones: reports in 2024 covered regulatory approval and app lending; they do not retroactively make those completed facts at the time of the 2022 announcement.

In its 29 September 2022 post, SALT attributed this statement to CEO Joe Dalton: “It’s amazing to think that we’re fundraising again, but as a very different proposition to where we were 8 months ago.” The quotation reflects the company’s account of its position at the time.
