Bitfinex Hacker Ilya Lichtenstein Sentenced to Five Years in Prison

Ilya Lichtenstein received a five-year sentence for money-laundering conspiracy tied to the Bitfinex hack. The roughly $1 billion figure reflects the laundered bitcoin’s value at the 2022 arrests, not at the 2016 theft.

Ilya Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years in prison on November 14, 2024, for conspiring to launder bitcoin stolen in the 2016 hack of cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex. The headline’s roughly $1 billion refers to the later value of the portion prosecutors said was laundered—not the value of the bitcoin when it was stolen.

What happened in the Bitfinex case?

In August 2016, about 120,000 bitcoin were stolen from Bitfinex. The cryptocurrency was worth approximately $71 million at the time, according to prosecutors as reported by the Associated Press. The theft represented about 36% of Bitfinex’s assets, a figure attributed to Bitfinex attorney Barry Berke in the AP report.

Lichtenstein pleaded guilty in August 2023 to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. His five-year prison sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington, D.C. The charge and sentence concern money laundering; the AP account reports that he admitted to the hack as part of the case narrative.

Why does the headline say roughly $1 billion?

The dollar amounts describe different valuation dates. Bitcoin’s price changed substantially between the 2016 theft and the arrests in 2022. According to the AP report, about 21% of the stolen funds were laundered. That share was worth at least $14 million using 2016 prices, but more than $1 billion by the time Lichtenstein and his wife, Heather Morgan, were arrested in February 2022.

Figure What it describes
Approximately $71 million Value of the roughly 120,000 bitcoin at the time of the August 2016 hack, according to prosecutors as reported by AP.
At least $14 million Reported 2016-price value of the portion prosecutors said was laundered, about 21% of the stolen funds.
More than $1 billion Value of that laundered portion at the time of the February 2022 arrests, as reported by AP.
Over $6 billion Value AP reported for the remaining seized funds in its November 2024 account; this is a historical valuation, not a current one.

These are reported historical values, not updated valuations. The bitcoin amount is more stable as a description of the theft; its dollar equivalent depends on the date used.

How did the laundering unfold?

  1. August 2016: Lichtenstein hacked Bitfinex and stole approximately 120,000 bitcoin.
  2. Several months later: According to AP’s summary of the case, he began moving bitcoin through transactions across accounts and platforms to conceal its path.
  3. More than three years after the hack: He told Morgan about the theft. AP, summarizing prosecutors’ account, reported that he had initially sought her help laundering proceeds without explaining exactly what he was doing.
  4. February 2022: Lichtenstein and Morgan were arrested.
  5. August 2023: Lichtenstein pleaded guilty to money-laundering conspiracy.
  6. November 14, 2024: He was sentenced to five years in prison.

What was recovered, and what does the recovery figure mean?

AP reported that authorities seized the remaining funds, then valued at over $6 billion. At sentencing, defense attorney Samson Enzer said more than 96% of the stolen funds had been recovered. That percentage is the defense attorney’s characterization as quoted by AP, rather than an independently established current recovery figure. The dollar valuation reported in November 2024 should not be read as the funds’ value today.

What did the judge and Lichtenstein say?

Judge Kollar-Kotelly said, “It’s important to send a message that you can’t commit these crimes with impunity, that there are consequences to them.” The AP report also quotes her describing the theft as “meticulously planned.”

Lichtenstein told the court, “I want to take full responsibility for my actions and make amends any way I can.” Prosecutors argued that the hack and laundering were planned rather than impulsive, writing that he spent months trying to gain access and permissions needed to carry out the hack.

What the sentence does—and does not—establish

The five-year sentence was imposed on Lichtenstein for the money-laundering conspiracy conviction. AP reported that he received credit at sentencing for two years and nine months spent in jail after his February 2022 arrest. The report said Morgan was scheduled to be sentenced the following Monday, but that contemporaneous schedule does not establish her eventual sentence or either defendant’s custody status as of October 8, 2026.
