LanzaJet’s First Commercial Ethanol-to-SAF Facility: What Opened in Georgia—and What It Produces

LanzaJet’s Freedom Pines Fuels in Georgia marked its opening in January 2024. The facility later reported commercial-scale production of on-spec jet fuel, while a 2026 filing still described work toward sustained commercial operations.

LanzaJet’s Freedom Pines Fuels facility in Soperton, Georgia, held its grand opening on January 24, 2024. The ceremony marked a major step for ethanol-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), but it did not mean the plant was already making fuel: LanzaJet’s timeline says the opening came before hydrocarbons were introduced. The company later reported commercial-scale production of on-spec jet fuel in November 2025; a subsequent filing still described commissioning and ramp-up toward sustained commercial operations.

What is LanzaJet’s Freedom Pines Fuels plant?

Freedom Pines Fuels is an industrial fuel-production facility in Soperton, Georgia. LanzaJet built it to use its Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) process, which converts ethanol into sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. The U.S. Department of Energy described it as a commercial ethanol-to-SAF facility when it opened in January 2024.

The opening was an important project milestone, not evidence of completed startup or routine fuel production. According to LanzaJet’s facility timeline, the grand opening took place before hydrocarbons were introduced into the plant.

How does ethanol become sustainable aviation fuel?

At Freedom Pines, ethanol is the feedstock for LanzaJet’s Alcohol-to-Jet pathway. The plant is designed to turn that alcohol into jet fuel and renewable diesel. The cited announcements identify the pathway and products, but do not provide a detailed process specification or a like-for-like lifecycle comparison with other SAF production routes.

Airbus has described LanzaJet’s technology as compatible with existing aircraft engines and associated fuel infrastructure, and said the pathway can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70% compared with fossil fuels. That figure is Airbus’s pathway claim—not a measured emissions result for Freedom Pines—and Airbus is an investor in LanzaJet. The cited release is not an independent lifecycle assessment or plant audit.

How much fuel was the plant designed to produce?

Fuel Announced amount What the figure means
Sustainable aviation fuel 9 million gallons DOE’s account of planned first-year output; not verified annual production.
Renewable diesel 1 million gallons DOE’s account of planned first-year output; not verified annual production.
Total sustainable fuels 10 million gallons per year LanzaJet’s announced facility capacity, not a verified annual output figure.

The figures describe the announced design and planned output, not a record of what the facility has produced in a year. For context, the DOE’s SAF Grand Challenge sets a national goal of at least 3 billion gallons of SAF supply annually by 2030. That is a U.S. target, not Freedom Pines’ production contribution.

What happened after the January 2024 opening?

LanzaJet’s facility page gives this chronology for construction and startup:

  • January 24, 2024: Grand opening ceremony.
  • May 2024: Mechanical completion achieved.
  • June 2024: Commissioning began.
  • August 2024: Feedstock was introduced into the system.
  • September 2024: Hurricane Helene caused a community utilities outage.
  • October 2024: Startup activities restarted after utilities were restored.

This is the company’s reported chronology. It helps explain why the 2024 ceremony should not be read as proof of immediate fuel production.

Is the ethanol-to-jet plant operating yet?

The answer depends on what “operating” means and which dated disclosure is used. On November 13, 2025, LanzaJet said Freedom Pines had fully operated and produced ASTM on-spec jet fuel from ethanol at commercial scale, calling it the first commercial-scale production of jet fuel using ethanol as feedstock. That establishes a significant production milestone.

A later LanzaTech SEC filing for the period ended June 30, 2026, said LanzaJet was working with investors and counterparties to advance commissioning, ramp-up, and sustained commercial operations at Freedom Pines. That later wording qualifies the status: the sources establish commercial-scale on-spec production in 2025, but do not establish that sustained commercial operation had been reached by the period covered by the filing.

Why does the facility matter beyond its output?

Freedom Pines is notable because it moved ethanol-to-jet from a proposed pathway to reported commercial-scale production at a dedicated facility. Its announced 10-million-gallon annual capacity is small beside the DOE’s national 2030 SAF goal, but the plant demonstrates a route that can use ethanol as feedstock and produce both jet fuel and renewable diesel.

LanzaJet’s facility page also reports more than 250 direct construction jobs, plus plans for 30 direct and 50 indirect operating jobs. The company estimates annual local economic impact at $75 million, including $5 million in wages and benefits and $70 million in other economic activity. These are company-reported figures and estimates, not audited outcomes established in the cited materials.
