The £1.29bn figure was a broad, press-reported total published in December 2025—not Manchester United’s current official borrowings. The club’s FY2026 accounts report £688.954m in borrowings and £621.708m in net debt at 30 June 2026. Those figures use different definitions and dates, so they are not a direct like-for-like update of the £1.29bn headline.
What was included in the £1.29bn headline?
On 11 December 2025, The Guardian reported a £1.29bn total alongside Manchester United’s first-quarter results. Its report cited £268m drawn on the revolving credit facility and £650m in noncurrent borrowings. The club’s first-quarter revenue was £140.3m and operating profit was £13m.
BBC Sport’s 11 December explanation said the broader total also included £539.7m in additional amounts outstanding, the vast majority of which related to transfer-fee payments. Of that amount, £323.4m was due within the next year. BBC described the total as combining rolling debt, historic borrowing associated with the Glazer family takeover and additional liabilities. It was a dated journalistic aggregation, not a company-defined balance-sheet line.
What do the latest official accounts say?
Manchester United plc’s FY2026 Form 20-F reports these figures at 30 June 2026:

| Measure | Amount | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Total borrowings | £688.954m | Company-reported borrowings at the year-end date. |
| Cash and cash equivalents | £67.246m | Cash deducted from borrowings in the company’s net-debt calculation. |
| Net debt | £621.708m | Total borrowings less cash and cash equivalents, under the company’s stated definition. |
| Gross contractual trade payables before discounting | £400.157m | A separate payable figure, not interchangeable with borrowings. |
The filing breaks total borrowings into £408.942m of senior secured notes, £168.612m of secured term-loan facility, £110m outstanding on the revolving facility and £1.4m of accrued interest on notes and the revolving facility. At 30 June 2026, it also reported £290m of undrawn revolving-facility access and said the group was compliant with its covenants.
The £400.157m trade-payables figure should not simply be added to borrowings and labelled a new total debt figure. The filing’s figures do not establish a reconciled, current total on the same broad basis as the December 2025 headline.

Why the figures cannot be compared as if they were the same
- They measure different things: the £1.29bn figure included liabilities beyond financial borrowings, while the filing gives a defined borrowings line and a separate net-debt measure.
- They refer to different dates: the headline accompanied first-quarter results in December 2025; the official figures above are as of 30 June 2026.
- Cash is treated differently: total borrowings are gross of cash; net debt subtracts cash and cash equivalents.
- The sources and labels differ: £1.29bn was a press-reported aggregation, whereas the 2026 borrowings and net-debt figures are company-reported accounting measures.
So the answer to “How much debt does Manchester United have?” depends on what is meant by debt. For the latest cited year-end accounts, the precise answers are £688.954m in total borrowings or £621.708m in net debt. Neither should be described as the club’s current £1.29bn official borrowing balance.

In its 23 September 2026 results release, Manchester United reported FY2026 revenue of £677.6m, operating profit of £22.6m and adjusted EBITDA of £216.4m for the year ended 30 June 2026. The company characterized revenue as a record despite the team not participating in UEFA competition. Revenue, operating profit and adjusted EBITDA provide operating context, but do not by themselves show how much cash is available to repay debt.

Chief executive Omar Berrada said the results demonstrated the “underlying strength” of the business and that the club would continue a “disciplined approach” to financial sustainability. That is management’s assessment, not an independent determination of the club’s financial position.
