Intuit, the company behind TurboTax, announced on July 10, 2024, that about 1,800 employees—roughly 10% of its workforce—would leave. The company also said it planned to hire about 1,800 people, mainly in engineering, product, sales, customer success and marketing, and expected overall headcount to grow in fiscal 2025 and beyond. Intuit linked the reorganization to increased investment in growth areas including data and AI, but its announcement did not establish that AI directly replaced all or most of the departing workers.
What Intuit announced in July 2024
In a July 10, 2024 employee message, CEO Sasan Goodarzi said approximately 1,800 employees, or 10% of Intuit’s workforce, would leave. The same announcement described a roughly equal number of planned hires and said the company expected its total headcount to grow in FY25 and beyond. Intuit’s announcement therefore described a reorganization involving both departures and hiring—not a plan to shrink the workforce overall.
The company said it was increasing investment in growth areas, especially data and AI, and aiming to build AI-native customer experiences. That is Intuit’s stated strategic rationale; it is not independent evidence that AI caused particular employees to lose their jobs.
Was AI the reason for all 1,800 departures?
No. Intuit connected the reorganization to its AI and data strategy, but it also cited performance expectations and several organizational changes. Goodarzi’s message associated about 1,050 departures with raised performance expectations. It also described a reduction of about 10% of director-and-above executives, the consolidation of 80 technology roles into selected locations, and the elimination of more than 300 roles to streamline work and redirect resources. These figures describe details of the announced changes; they should not be added together as though they were separate categories on top of the 1,800 total. Intuit’s employee message does not show that AI directly displaced all or most of those employees.

Goodarzi wrote, “We do not do layoffs to cut costs, and that remains true in this case.” He also warned that companies unprepared for the AI revolution would fall behind. Both are the CEO’s statements about Intuit’s approach and his view of AI; they do not independently demonstrate the results or effects of the reorganization. The July 10, 2024 SEC filing reproduces the employee message.
Support Intuit announced for departing employees
For US employees leaving under the 2024 plan, Intuit announced at least 16 weeks of pay plus two weeks for each year of service, 60 days before the September 9, 2024 departure date, at least six months of health coverage, and career-transition and job-placement services. The company said arrangements for international employees would reflect local requirements. These were terms announced for that 2024 reorganization, not a statement of benefits currently available. How the 2024 announcement differs from Intuit’s 2026 cuts
Intuit announced a separate workforce reduction on May 20, 2026, covering approximately 17% of its full-time workforce and presenting it as organizational simplification. It is a different event from the July 2024 announcement, which covered about 10% of the workforce and was accompanied by planned hiring and an expectation of overall headcount growth. Intuit’s May 20, 2026 SEC filing describes the later action.
TurboTax is one of Intuit’s tax-preparation services in the US and Canada. The company’s broader platform strategy is described as AI-driven and expert-enabled in its fiscal 2026 Form 10-K; that later strategy context does not change what the company established about individual job losses in 2024.
