What Madonna said about selling her songs
Madonna framed the decision as a matter of authorship and control: “Because they’re my songs. Ownership is everything isn’t it?” In the same interview, she described looking for “interesting, fun ways to rerelease my catalogue and introduce my music to a new generation.” Both quotations appear in The Independent’s report of the Variety interview.

Her comments establish her stated position in 2022; they are not a current statement about every right attached to every recording or composition. The distinction matters because “music catalog” can refer to different rights and arrangements.
What Warner’s catalog announcement does—and does not—say
Warner Music Group announced an agreement in 2021 covering Madonna’s Sire/Maverick/Warner recorded-music catalog. The company said the scope included 17 studio albums as well as singles, soundtrack recordings, live albums and compilations. Its announcement also says Warner Chappell Music globally administers Madonna’s songwriting work. Those are separate descriptions: recorded-music catalog arrangements are not the same thing as songwriting administration.

The announcement does not establish that Madonna personally owns every master or publishing right, nor does it say she sold ownership of all rights. Avoid treating the existence of the Warner agreement as proof of a catalog sale. Read the company’s August 16, 2021 announcement for its stated scope.
Why recording and songwriting rights are different
A recording (often called a master) is a particular recorded performance. A composition is the underlying song, including its music and lyrics. An arrangement may involve ownership, licensing, distribution, or administration, and those terms should not be collapsed into one claim about “owning the catalog.” Warner’s announcement refers to a recorded-music catalog agreement and separately to the global administration of songwriting work; it does not provide a full account of the rights or economics involved.

What her 2025 Warner signing means
On September 18, 2025, Madonna’s official site announced that she had signed with Warner Records for an upcoming dance album, describing the move as a return to her former label home. The announcement concerns a new album and label relationship; it does not announce a sale of her catalog. See the official announcement.
