The 19-storey student accommodation development at 37–43 Stirling Highway, Nedlands, has been approved—but a proposed increase in its capacity is still under assessment. The site is near UWA’s Crawley campus, and the latest City description lists 472 beds in the approved scheme; the Department of Planning’s amendment listing seeks 513 beds. Here’s where the project stands and what the plans include.
Where is the UWA student housing development?
The site is at 37–43 Stirling Highway, on the corner of Williams Road in Nedlands. PerthNow reported in November 2024 that it was about 500 metres from the University of Western Australia’s Crawley campus. The nearby QEII medical precinct is part of the wider area referenced in the original headline, but the available project details do not establish a measured distance to QEII.
The project is a Centurion proposal first reported as a $60 million mixed-use student accommodation development. In November 2024, it was being advertised for public comment; that is no longer its planning status.
Has the 19-storey development been approved?
Yes. The WA Department of Planning’s significant-development listing records approval by the Statutory Planning Committee on 7 May 2025. The approved development and a subsequent amendment application are separate planning matters: the underlying scheme has approval, while the proposed changes to it remain under assessment.

How many beds are planned?
The figures differ across the current official descriptions and should be read with their source and planning status attached.
| Figure | What it describes | Status and source |
|---|---|---|
| 472 beds across 440 units | The approved scheme | The City of Nedlands’ 2026 description of the approved development. |
| 482 beds | Baseline used for the amendment application | The Department of Planning’s amendment listing; it differs from the City’s 472-bed description. |
| 513 beds | Capacity requested through revised layouts | The Department’s amendment listing says this proposal is under assessment, not approved. |
The amendment proposes revised layouts on levels 2–17 to increase the bed count from 482 to 513. It also proposes changes to operable and fixed windows on part of the façade. The Department says no change to the approved building height is proposed.

What does the approved scheme include?
The City’s 2026 description lists student amenities, a small commercial tenancy and limited basement parking. The 2024 proposal report had also described streetfront retail and commercial opportunities, communal living and recreation spaces, and basement parking.
- Accommodation: 472 student beds across 440 units in the City’s description of the approved scheme.
- Shared facilities: study areas, a small café, laundry and communal lounges.
- Commercial space: a 107-square-metre tenancy.
- Access and parking: 11 basement parking bays, bicycle parking and a pick-up/drop-off bay.
What is known about construction and opening?
City of Nedlands minutes from March 2026 record approval of temporary road closures related to development works, with arrangements scheduled through 28 February 2028. That indicates works-related planning, but it does not establish a construction completion or opening date. The sources also do not establish that the building is accepting bookings.

What prospective students should check
Because the amendment has not been approved, its requested 513-bed capacity should not be treated as the final scheme. Anyone considering the project as a future housing option should look for a confirmed opening date, details of available accommodation and an official booking channel before making plans; none is established in the cited project information.
In a statement reproduced by PerthNow in November 2024, the developer’s report said the development would provide additional options for students, particularly regional and international students, close to public transport and amenities. That is the developer’s stated rationale, not an independently verified finding about affordability, availability or student demand.
