LEGO reportedly spent several hundred million dollars since 2022 while tripling its software developer workforce to more than 1,800, as it builds up in-house game development. The amount comes from reporting on a Financial Times interview with LEGO Group CEO Niels B. Christiansen; no exact total is publicly specified in the accessible account, and the reported spending was not identified as exclusively for games.
What LEGO reportedly spent—and what the figure means
A March 2025 MobileSyrup report, citing a Financial Times interview with Christiansen, said LEGO had spent “several hundred” million dollars since 2022 and tripled its overall software developer headcount to more than 1,800. The exact investment total is not stated in the accessible report.
That wording should be treated as an approximate reported amount, not an audited figure or a disclosed budget line for game development. The staffing number is for software developers overall; it does not establish how many work specifically on games. Christiansen characterized in-house game development as something LEGO was building up, but did not announce a named slate, timetable, or commitment to make every future game internally.
LEGO is building internal capacity while keeping partnerships
LEGO’s internal investment should not be read as an announced retreat from outside partners. In a February 2025 announcement, LEGO Holding said its new entity, LEGO Digital Play, would operate independently from the LEGO Group and focus on digital play experiences beyond those already available. The same announcement said the LEGO Group would continue developing and investing in existing branded partnerships and titles, including LEGO Fortnite. The two approaches—building in-house capability and continuing existing partnerships—are therefore compatible; the announcement does not specify how future projects will be divided between them. Leadership and later gaming context
A dedicated game leader
LEGO announced that Fredrik Loving would become Senior Vice President and Global Head of LEGO GAME, effective July 1, 2025. The company cited his experience leading game studios and overseeing game development and launches. The appointment signals leadership attention to games, but by itself does not provide a spending breakdown or project roadmap. LEGO leadership announcement
FY2025 results show gaming activity, not the investment total
In its March 10, 2026 announcement of FY2025 results, LEGO said 2025 marked 30 years of LEGO video games. It also reported that LEGO Fortnite Odyssey had passed one billion player hours since launch and noted gaming-franchise products including LEGO Minecraft and LEGO Super Mario. These details show the breadth of LEGO’s gaming activity, but they do not confirm or update the amount reportedly invested since 2022. LEGO FY2025 results
