Job hunting in 2025 called for a more focused approach than simply sending out as many applications as possible. Start with roles that match your skills and practical needs, tailor each application truthfully, track follow-ups, and verify employers before sharing money or sensitive information. The labor market varied by location and occupation, so use local evidence rather than treating any single trend as universal.
What the 2025 job market looked like
Several surveys and reports point to a competitive search, but their figures measure different things and should not be read as a single global hiring rate. LinkedIn reported in January 2025 that 58% of people globally planned to look for a job that year. In its survey, 37% of job seekers said they were applying to more jobs than ever but hearing back less, while 73% of surveyed HR professionals said fewer than half of the applications they received met all listed criteria. These are survey findings, not a census of job seekers or employers. LinkedIn’s 2025 job-search trends also included advice from Career Expert Catherine Fisher to apply more strategically to roles that match a candidate’s skill set.
The U.S. picture was mixed. Indeed Hiring Lab’s January 2025 outlook described a cooling from the exceptional labor market of 2022 and identified construction, manufacturing, and health care as comparatively strong areas at that time. Those observations do not predict conditions for every job, city, or country. The report’s posting data also showed that about 2 in 1,000 U.S. job postings mentioned a basket of generative AI terms as of late October 2024. That describes wording in postings before 2025; it does not measure every role that might benefit from AI skills. Indeed Hiring Lab’s 2025 U.S. outlook further reported that 17.6% of U.S. postings required at least a bachelor’s degree in October 2024, down from roughly 20% before the pandemic. A posting requirement is not the same as whether a degree is useful or preferred.
A later U.S. retrospective published by the Federal Reserve in May 2026 found that 13% of adults started a new job in 2025, compared with 15% in 2022. Applications were unchanged while new-job starts fell, suggesting it had become harder to move into a new job. The report also found that one in four U.S. workers used generative AI at work in the prior month in 2025; that is a measure of workplace use, not job seekers’ use of AI in applications. The Federal Reserve’s 2025 household well-being report is U.S.-specific and retrospective, not a forecast made before 2025.

Choose a realistic target before applying
Define a manageable set of role families rather than searching every title that sounds promising. For each, consider the work you can demonstrate, required qualifications, location or remote expectations, schedule, and compensation needs. Then compare those needs with actual job descriptions and local labor-market information.
U.S. readers can use the Bureau of Labor Statistics career resources to explore occupations, duties, education or training expectations, wages, and outlook. The BLS also identifies CareerOneStop as a U.S. Department of Labor service for career exploration, training, and job search. For federal vacancies, USAJOBS lets users search by agency, title, salary, location, or career field, save application documents, and set notifications. These services are U.S.-specific; readers elsewhere should seek the equivalent official labor and public-service resources in their country.

Apply for fit, not just volume
Read the full posting and apply when the essential work and requirements align with your experience or skills. Make relevant outcomes and responsibilities easy to find, and use the employer’s terminology where it accurately describes what you have done. Do not claim a qualification, tool, or result you do not have. LinkedIn’s survey supports taking a more strategic approach, but it does not establish that a particular résumé format or keyword formula will beat screening software.
Adapt your résumé and application to the role by bringing the most relevant evidence forward. If you are changing industries or functions, connect transferable skills to the duties listed rather than relying on a broad statement that you are adaptable. LinkedIn reported that 56% of surveyed people globally were open to a role in a new industry or area and 25% planned to learn new skills in 2025. Those are intentions, not evidence that a paid course is necessary. Compare skill gaps against real postings, then consider reputable training only when it addresses a specific need.

Keep the search organized
A simple record can prevent missed follow-ups and show where your effort is going. Use a spreadsheet, calendar, or paper tracker with fields such as:
- Employer and role title
- Posting link and date saved
- Application date and version of the résumé or materials sent
- Recruiter or hiring contact and how you verified them
- Next step, follow-up date, and outcome
Review the tracker regularly. If applications are not producing conversations, reassess the match between your target roles and evidence, whether your materials make that evidence clear, and whether the roles remain open. Do not assume that more applications alone will solve a mismatch.

Use AI tools cautiously
AI can help with drafting or comparing your experience with a job description, but it is not a universal hiring requirement and should not replace your judgment. LinkedIn describes paid tools for résumé and cover-letter improvement and a job-match feature that compares skills and experience with positions. Those are vendor-described features, not independent proof that using them improves interview or hiring outcomes. If you use an AI tool, check every claim, correct errors, protect personal information, and ensure the final application reflects your real experience.
Indeed Hiring Lab’s estimate of about 2 in 1,000 U.S. postings mentioning GenAI-related terms by late October 2024 is too narrow to justify telling every job seeker to pursue an AI credential. Focus on skills requested in your target occupation and location.

Protect your money and personal information
Job scams can imitate legitimate employers and recruiters. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission reported more than 105,000 job scams in 2024, with reported losses exceeding $513 million—nearly three times the reported scam count in 2020. These figures are U.S. reports, not a global estimate. The FTC’s job-scam report describes imposters seeking money or personal information.
- Independently confirm the employer and recruiter using contact details on the employer’s official website.
- Be wary of requests to pay for a job, equipment, training, or access, and of requests for sensitive personal or financial information unusually early in the process.
- Do not rely only on an email address, message, or website supplied by the person contacting you; verify through an independently found official channel.
- Report suspected fraud to the FTC if you are in the United States.
Evaluate an offer against your real needs
When an offer arrives, compare more than the headline salary. Consider benefits, schedule, location and commuting demands, stability, and the actual duties and expectations of the role. Check whether the written terms match what you were told and take time to resolve unclear details before accepting. These are practical decision criteria, not a benchmark or guarantee about what an offer should contain.
