Joann’s former store chain is not reopening. After Joann closed its stores in 2025, Michaels acquired JOANN intellectual property and private-label brands, then brought JOANN-branded products into its own Knit & Sew Shop. Michaels said the shop was available in more than 1,200 stores as of September 9, 2026; that is a broad rollout inside Michaels, not a nationwide reopening of Joann locations.
Is Joann coming back as a store chain?
No. Joann announced a wind-down and closed its stores in 2025 after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for a second time in a year. The Associated Press reported that the company planned going-out-of-business sales amid challenges including sluggish consumer demand and inventory shortages. There is no indication in the available announcements that Joann’s former retail chain has reopened. The Associated Press reported on Joann’s closure.
The comeback is about the brand and some products, not the old stores. On June 5, 2025, Michaels said it had completed an acquisition of JOANN intellectual property and private-label brands, including Big Twist. Michaels did not announce that it had acquired or reopened Joann’s retail locations. Michaels’ acquisition announcement describes the transaction.
What does “inside Michaels” mean?
Michaels introduced The Knit & Sew Shop as an in-store concept featuring Michaels and JOANN branding. It brings together fabric, yarn, sewing and needlecraft products within Michaels stores. The retailer said in September 2026 that the expanded shop was available in more than 1,200 stores and that fabric was available in nearly 90% of its stores. Those are Michaels-reported figures as of September 9, 2026, not a guarantee that every location carries the same products.

In September 2026, the company said the expansion added more than 1,600 products across fabric, yarn, sewing and needlecraft. These figures describe different stages of the rollout, so the newer store-coverage figures are the better guide to its reported current reach. How to check whether your local Michaels has fabric or sewing supplies
- Search for the exact item on Michaels.com. Use a specific product name or type, such as Big Twist yarn or quilting fabric, rather than relying only on the Knit & Sew label.
- Select your local store. Review the item’s displayed availability and any pickup option for that location.
- Confirm in-store services if you need them. The announcements do not establish that every store offers the same fabric-cutting service or assortment; contact the store if cutting or another service is essential to your project.
Michaels’ September 2026 store-coverage figures refer to the shop and fabric category, not confirmed stock of each item. For a wider sample of fabric choices, the company described a Swatch Bar in its Next Gen concept stores, where customers can handle samples and order from 1,000 online fabric samples. The samples are for browsing and ordering; they do not mean all represented fabrics are stocked in that store.
Is the new Michaels format available everywhere?
No. The Knit & Sew Shop is broadly rolled out, but Michaels’ more immersive Next Gen format was still limited to three concept locations in the company’s August 13, 2026 announcement: Rogers, Arkansas; Easton, Ohio; and Irving, Texas. Michaels described plans to continue opening concept stores and bring enhanced elements to existing stores through 2026. The company did not say that every Michaels store had the Next Gen layout or its Swatch Bar. Michaels’ Next Gen announcement describes the format and locations.
