HighPost announced on August 15, 2024, that HIPstr Fund I had closed with $100 million in capital commitments—not $100 million already invested. The fund was created to back early-stage consumer businesses that did not fit HighPost’s traditional buyout strategy.
What is HIPstr?
HIPstr is the early-stage investment arm of HighPost Capital, an investment firm formed in 2019 by the Moross and Bezos families, according to HighPost Capital. Mark Bezos, Jeff Bezos’s brother, is associated with the firm; David Moross was identified in the fund announcement as HIPstr’s chairman and CEO.
HighPost said it created HIPstr to pursue earlier-stage businesses beyond the scope of its traditional buyout strategy. The distinction is about investment focus: HIPstr targets early-stage companies, rather than being described as another buyout fund.
How much did HIPstr raise?
HighPost announced on August 15, 2024, that its debut vehicle, HIPstr Fund I, closed with $100 million in capital commitments. That figure comes from the company’s announcement. Commitments are capital investors have agreed to provide to a fund; the announcement does not mean the full amount had already been invested in companies.
#1 Best Overall
A Bloomberg report republished by HighPost said the fund had about 30 investors and that nearly 40% of the debut fund had been invested at the time of its August 15, 2024 report. Those are figures reported at launch, not updates on the fund’s present deployment or investor count.
What does HIPstr invest in?
HighPost described HIPstr’s focus as early-stage consumer growth and consumer technology enablement companies. In announcing the fund, Moross characterized the opportunity this way: “We launched HIPstr to capitalize on an attractive market opportunity driven by a reset in early-stage company valuations alongside a structural shift in how entrepreneurs scale companies.” That is Moross’s explanation of the investment rationale, not an independently established market finding.
