Jeff Bezos announced in November 2023 that he planned to leave Seattle for Miami, prompting questions about Washington’s taxes on the wealthy. He publicly cited family, his partner and Blue Origin’s growing presence near Cape Canaveral—not taxes—as reasons for the move. The timing alone does not establish whether taxes played any private role.
Why did Jeff Bezos say he was moving?
In a November 2023 account, the Associated Press reported that Bezos planned to move from Seattle to Miami. Bezos described the decision as emotional, saying, “As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me.” He said he wanted to be closer to his parents and partner and noted that Blue Origin operations were increasingly shifting to Cape Canaveral. He also said he had lived in Seattle longer than anywhere else. The AP report does not attribute the move to taxes. Those public explanations do not prove that no other private considerations factored into his decision.
Does Washington have a wealth tax?
Washington has a capital-gains tax and has enacted a future high-income tax, but those are not taxes on a person’s total net worth. A separate wealth-tax bill, HB 1319, proposed a tax on ownership of stocks, bonds and other financial intangible property. The Washington Legislature’s bill history shows that the proposal remained in its existing status in 2026; it was not enacted. The bill history is the relevant source for its status. A 2024 Department of Revenue study described the landscape at the time it was prepared; that historical snapshot does not determine the later status of HB 1319.
How Washington’s taxes differ
The key distinctions are what is taxed, what connects the taxpayer or transaction to Washington, and when the tax applies. The rates below apply only to amounts covered by the relevant laws, including their definitions, exemptions and deductions.

| Tax | What it taxes | Rate and timing | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capital-gains excise tax | Certain sales or exchanges of long-term capital assets, subject to allocation rules and exemptions | 7% base rate; an additional 2.9% applies to the covered portion of Washington capital gains over $1 million beginning with tax year 2025 | Enacted in 2021; applies to covered transactions beginning January 1, 2022 |
| Proposed wealth tax, HB 1319 | Ownership of stocks, bonds and other financial intangible property | The proposal’s status does not establish an operative tax rate | Not enacted; the Legislature’s 2025–26 bill history shows it retained in its existing status in 2026 |
| High-income tax, SB 6346 | Covered income over $1 million—not total net worth | 9.9% on covered income exceeding $1 million, beginning with calendar-year income in 2028 | Enacted March 30, 2026, as Chapter 238, Laws of 2026 |
The Department of Revenue explains the capital-gains tax and its coverage on its capital-gains tax page and describes the additional tier in its notice on tiered rates. The legislature’s SB 6346 bill report documents the new income tax and its effective date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does moving out of Washington avoid its capital-gains tax?
A change of address alone does not settle the tax question. Washington Department of Revenue guidance says an individual who is domiciled in Washington and intends to move in the future remains domiciled there until the facts support a change. For capital-gains-tax allocation, a person previously domiciled in Washington bears the burden of proving that domicile changed. The department’s interim statement on domicile describes this guidance.

What is not established about Bezos’s taxes?
- The public account of his move does not establish whether taxes were a private factor in his decision.
- The cited state sources do not calculate Bezos’s individual Washington tax liability or tax savings.
- They do not provide a reliable estimate of Washington revenue lost specifically because he moved. A dollar figure would require a source that explains its assumptions and connects the estimate to an actual tax liability.
