JBS USA broke ground on its planned sausage plant at Perry Industrial Park on October 14, 2025. The company projected a $135 million investment, up to 500 jobs and annual production of 130 million pounds of sausage at full capacity. Those are announced plans—not confirmed results—and the available records do not establish that the plant had begun operating by October 8, 2026.
What JBS is building
JBS announced the project on May 29, 2025, and held its groundbreaking in Perry on October 14, 2025. The Iowa Economic Development Authority describes the planned facility as a 150,000-square-foot animal harvest plant. JBS said the facility would process sows and produce sausage; its planned output could supply its Ankeny operation, which makes ready-to-eat sausage and bacon, according to Iowa Public Radio. That reported supply plan does not identify a retail brand or establish that products made at the Perry plant are already on sale.
JBS described the project as its first sausage facility in the United States. At full capacity, the company projected annual processing of 500,000 sows and production of 130 million pounds of sausage. JBS also estimated that the planned output could feed more than four million people nationwide per year; that is the company’s estimate, not an independently measured impact. How much is being invested—and why the figures differ
JBS announced a $135 million investment in May 2025. In its project approval release, the Iowa Economic Development Authority listed a $137 million capital investment. These are figures published by different organizations for the project; the sources do not explain the $2 million difference, so they should not be treated as interchangeable or as a single audited final cost. What job numbers have been projected
The job figures vary by source and project phase. JBS said the plant would begin with one shift and 250 team members, with a later expansion to two shifts and 500 employees. The Iowa Economic Development Authority’s June 2025 release described 250 jobs within the first three years and 500 in subsequent years. JBS’s initial announcement presented 500 direct jobs as the overall target, while also estimating 250 local construction jobs. These are projections, not confirmed hiring totals. What public incentives were reported
The Iowa Economic Development Authority approved assistance through the state’s High Quality Jobs program. Iowa Public Radio reported $12 million in state tax benefits and a planned $10 million city tax increment financing rebate over ten years. Where the project stands
JBS initially projected that operations would begin in late 2026. An Iowa Department of Natural Resources stormwater activity record for the JBS Sausage Plant at 192 Soumas Avenue in Perry shows permit renewal activity in July 2026. That confirms regulatory activity at the site, but it does not show that construction was complete, that hiring projections had been met or that production had started. The project was presented by company leaders and local officials as an economic recovery milestone for Perry, a community affected by the loss of a major pork-processing employer. Iowa Capital Dispatch described the site as roughly 110 acres on Perry’s southeast side and reported that a second shift was expected about six months after the plant became operational. That timing was an expectation, not evidence that the shift has begun. At the groundbreaking, JBS USA CEO Wesley Batista Filho said, “Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter—not only for JBS USA, but also for the people of Perry, for Iowa’s pork producers, and for those helping feed America every day.” The statement was issued by the company.
